ALLURINGLY, who has come up against Enable three times this season including when third in the Investec Oaks, further boosted her pedigree when landing the featured Irish Stallion Farms EBF Hurry Harriet Stakes.
The Fastnet Rock filly, heavily supported in the morning from 7/2 and sent off the 7/4 favourite, was providing Aidan O’Brien and the Coolmore partners with their third win in this extended nine-furlong listed race in the past five years.
Seamie Heffernan gave her a patient ride, making steady headway in the straight and leading close home to beat Making Light by a neck, with Elegant Pose a length and a quarter back in third.
Heffernan said: “She was the classiest filly in the race but her last two runs have been a little disappointing. I was happy enough to come on the wide outside and get a clear run.
“We haven’t seen the best of her. She ran well in Chester (second to Enable), and it looks like she’s back to what we think she is.”
Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning teamed up for a 63/1 double highlighted by the all-the-way victory of Panstarr in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap.
The Godolphin homebred daughter of Pivotal was in command in the final furlong to beat Rickrack by three and a half lengths and the Coolcullen maestro is hopeful of even better to come: “I think she has a chance of being a blacktype filly but she’ll have another run before that. She hasn’t always come up to expectations but is happy doing what she is doing (making the running).”
Solar Wave initiated the double when landing the Join The Gowran Park Racing Club For €100 Nursery also at odds of 7/1. The Vocalised filly stayed on best inside the final furlong to beat Outside Inside by one and three-quarter lengths.
Bolger said: “She only has one eye but it doesn’t seem to do her any harm. I’d say she’ll handle any ground and it looks like she will get a bit further. She’s out of a mare by Galileo and that always helps.”
GALWAY
Quizical, runner-up twice at the Galway Festival, provided Sheila Lavery with her 10th winner of the season in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. The 5/2 chance was prominent throughout under Ronan Whelan, and kept on well under pressure inside the final furlong to beat Sirjack Thomas by three-quarters of a length.
Lavery, who trains the juvenile for her brother John, said: “He deserved that. Ronan feels that he’ll be an even better horse in better company as he was still a bit keen. Up to this with the draw he hasn’t really learned how to race as he’s been out wide on his own. He said he won with a bit in hand and his ears pricked.
“He’s a tough horse and that’s his third race in just a few weeks. Like a lot of the Roderic O’Connors he likes a bit of cut, and he’s improving.”
The dual-purpose Fiesole recorded his fourth win in just over three months when leading a furlong out for Denis Linehan to beat Here For The Craic by half a length in the McEnery Cup Handicap.
The 8/1 shot is trained for Pauline Doyle by her son Eoin, who said: “He did it well. I was a little concerned about the ground. He had a bit of form over hurdles with an ease but I think he’s a bit better on a quicker surface. He could go to Listowel. He’s only 109 over hurdles and maybe there is another good handicap in him on the flat as well.”
EMOTIONAL
The 20-strong Let’s Get Lucky Racing Club lived up to their name when successful with a first venture into ownership via Kandahari in the Golf Membership At Gowran Park For 2018 Apprentice Handicap. After the 11/2 chance came with a powerful run on the outer for Killian Leonard in the straight to collar No Way Jack close home, trainer John McConnell said: “I’m delighted for the lads who took her over this year and we’ve just been waiting on the soft ground really. She’s a very tough and genuine filly.
“One of the owners, Gavin, watched the race in America on FaceTime and was bawling crying at the end of the phone. He’s heavily involved and was very emotional about it.”
Birds Of Prey, runner-up to Derby winner Wings Of Eagles at Killarney last year, opened his account at the sixth attempt when leading inside the final furlong to beat another Ballydoyle colt, World Stage, in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.
John Oxx, who trains the easy-to-back 12/1 chance for Barbara Keller, said: “I was worried about the ground as he’s only run on fast ground. He was working on it in the spring and he went alright on it so we took a chance and he got through it.
“The distance is what’s made the difference. We were running him over a mile being by Sir Prancealot but he obviously enjoyed the step-up, and a mile and a quarter is probably the minimum we should keep him at now. He’s versatile ground wise and consistent. Niall (McCullagh) gave him a good ride and he’ll go for a handicap next.”
