TWO more stakes races went for export at Naas on Wednesday evening as English raiders landed both of the listed contests on the card.
Karl Burke bagged his third winner of the year on Irish soil when Miss Lamai justified her short price in the Arqana Irish EBF Marwell Stakes.
The Mehmas filly went to post a 10/11 shot having finished fourth in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot on her previous outing.
Clifford Lee produced the hotpot with a strong run to lead inside the final furlong and she asserted late on to beat Make Haste by a length and three-quarters.
“We’re delighted with that. She’s a good filly and she’s a tough filly as well,” said Burke.
“I thought if she ran up to either of her last two runs, she had to be hard to beat but you never know with two-year-old fillies so it’s great to get the job done.
“It’s huge for Chris (Hirst), who lives in Thailand, as he’s building up a broodmare band.
“She’s in the Lowther and we’ll discuss that. I’ve always thought she’d be a better filly with a bit of cover and that’s worked out today.”
Turn of foot
A couple of races later Nighteyes showed an impressive turn of foot to land the Listed Yeomanstown Stud Irish EBF Stakes for David O’Meara.
Danny Tudhope held his mount up in the race, run over just shy of six furlongs, and she got a lovely split on the stand’s rail a furlong from home.
The Night Of Thunder filly, owned by Akela Thoroughbreds Limited, powered through to lead in the closing stages and the 10/3 favourite pulled away late on to record a comprehensive three-length victory.
Tudhope said: “I didn’t plan on being that far back but she was just a bit anxious in the stalls and she missed the beat a little bit. Probably in hindsight it wasn’t a bad thing.
“I’m delighted and it’s great for the owners.
“She’s done nothing wrong this season, she keeps improving and she deserves to win a listed race.”
COLIN Keane bagged a double to close out proceedings on the night courtesy of Power Under Me and Facethepuckout.
The Ger Lyons-trained Power Under Me went to post a 5/6 shot in the Hurling For Cancer August 12th Race and had to battle to get the better of Warrior Brave.
He overhauled that rival inside the final furlong and was made to work to record his half-length success.
“He’s a lovely horse and that’s a nice bonus,” said Lyons. “It wasn’t on the agenda as he’s in the middle of a holiday at the minute, aiming for an autumn campaign.
“He qualified for this race, you don’t expect to get this kind of ground at this time of the year and it just fell right for him.
“He’s a star and I’m delighted for Vincent and Geraldine (Gaul), he’s just been a lovely horse for them.”
Michael O’Callaghan’s Facethepuckout was also expected to need the outing ahead of his run in the concluding Bert House Stud Handicap.
The 9/2 shot was making his seasonal debut in the seven-furlong contest and finished off well under Keane to lead in the closing stages and edged out long-time leader Physique by a head.
“That was lovely. It’s a little bit of a surprise because I said to Colin that the horse is well but he’ll probably just take a blow,” said O’Callaghan.
“He said at the furlong pole he exploded and went for girths but filled himself up and said he’s just well.
“He’s in the Ahonoora at Galway and might get in off a low weight.”
No surprise for Cromwell
The opening Irish Stallions Farms EBF produced a 33/1 winner but the victory of Diego Ventura was no shock for trainer Gavin Cromwell.
Gary Carroll produced the Mehmas colt with a strong late run to get up for a half-length victory over Magnum Force.
“I’m not surprised, we liked him. The only thing is, I’m sorry that I didn’t back him when I saw the price afterwards!” said Cromwell, who trains the winner for John Brennan.
“He goes really well. He was green, pulling up in front, and he won with loads of horse left. He could be very nice.”
Syndicate is Making Memories with Nituna
IT was a perfect start for the Making Memories Racing Club as their first horse Nituna landed a last gasp victory in the second division of the O’Neill & Co. Apprentice Handicap.
The Sheila Lavery-trained filly lunged late on the outside for Robyn Donaghue-Leahy to lead just at the line and pip Cannes Do by a short-head in the mile contest.
Lavery said of the 3/1 winner: “It’s the very first runner for the Making Memories Racing Club, it’s all downhill from here!
“Robyn felt confident that she was going to get there. She was very comfortable with how the horse was travelling and said she loved hitting the bit of traffic.”
In the first division of the race Selective Power came good in style for trainer Thomas Coyle.
Sean Bird was soon in front on the Tamayuz gelding and the 14/1 shot galloped on strongly in the closing stages to record a six-and-a-half length win over Pimstrel.
Galloped on
“This horse has my head wrecked! He is some work horse but today’s the first time he’s done it,” said Coyle.
“I’m delighted for my Dad, Paul, who hasn’t been well. This is his syndicate (Urban & Rural Boys) so it means a lot.”
In the sprint handicap on the card Universally came with a late charge to land the spoils for trainer Eoghan O’Neill.
The 12/1 shot got on top late on, under Niall McCullagh, to grab Mint Man and record a length-and-a-quarter win.
“As long as he gets the splits, he always finishes the race,” said O’Neill.
“Ground is key to him, he needs to get his toe in. I’m hoping to take him and No Niki No over for the Racing League meeting at Chepstow on August 8th.”
