IEC reports
bacteria finding
THE Irish Equine Centre has isolated Klebsiella pneumoniae capsule Type 5 from a routine CEM sample in a thoroughbred mare, the first such case in 2024. This follows on from 2023 when five cases of Capsule Type 5 and 2 cases of Capsule Type 1 were identified, by far the greatest number of cases we have seen for many years. This bacterium can cause severe uterine infection which impacts fertility and can be transmitted between horses at covering. All breeding stock should be screened for this and other infectious causes of metritis by CEM testing in advance of breeding with capsule typing of any Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae isolated.
