Owner J.P. McManus has paid tribute to three-time Champion Hurdle winner Istabraq who has died at Martinstown Stud in Co Limerick.
The tribute reads: "Sadly, Istabraq passed away at 1.15am this morning at the ripe old age of 32. He was a very special horse who gave us many great days of fun and enjoyment.
"Our thanks to Lara Hegarty, Johnny O'Brien and all the staff at Martinstown who took such fantastic care of him over many years.
We are pleased that we gave him a good celebration for his most recent birthday in May. He leaves Noreen, myself and the family with wonderful memories."
Career highlights
Istabraq will forever be remembered as a legend of the sport, with career highlights being his Champion Hurdle wins in 1998, 1999 and 2000, the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle in 1996, the Aintree Hurdle in 1999 and the Punchestown Champion Hurdle also in 1999.
He was partnered in all 29 of his races over hurdles by Charlie Swan - champion National Hunt jockey in Ireland for nine consecutive years.
After a fruitful career earning over £1,000,000 in prize money, Istabraq lived out his retirement at the McManus-owned Martinstown Stud.
