TAGHMON in Co Wexford hosted a hugely successful Southern Region meeting last Sunday on a course generously provided by the O’Keeffe family. The huge crowd was testamount to what a valuable role pony racing has in bringing racing into the community and local rider Conor Walsh used the occasion to showcase his talents as he recorded a treble by winning the first three races on the card.
The 12.2hh race saw Tail To Tail make a valiant effort from the front under Dylan O’Connor but Conor produced the Listowel-based Curly Syndicate’s Another Tiger to lead inside the final furlong for a two-length win.
Hello Thunder made it another win for Listowel as he made all for a comprehensive victory in the 13.2hh for owner Pat O’Sullivan. Hello Star completed the treble in the 14hh as Sore Looser and Little Maxi turned out again following their efforts in the 13.2hh but could never lay a glove on the winner.
TALENT
Danny King also displayed talent to good effect as he recorded a treble. Castle Racing’s Xantico took the 15hh race after a dour battle with That’s Our Grouse, getting home with a length to spare. Danny’s second winner was another for the Dunmanway outfit as Tiger Force advertised his Dingle Derby claims with victory in the feature race of the day, the Taghmon Derby, as they quickened clear from two furlongs out.
The third leg of the King treble was a family success as Oopsy Daisy took the maiden with a pillar-to-post run for his Dad Richard.
Michael McGuane is enjoying an excellent season and he added a brace to his seasonal tally as he teamed up with the Duagh, Listowel stable of Batsy Maher.
In the mile race, That’s My Daddy turned in an eye-catching performance to see off the The Rasher Man owned by Michael’s father, Martin McGuane.
Michael got his second winner of the day and his seventh of the season in the 12-furlong race where Who’s Your Daddy stayed on strongly to win from Tyner newcomer She’s Got It.
DOUBLE
Joey Sheridan was another rider to bag a double, the Tipperary based rider taking the 14.2hh race on Pacman who looked to be labouring early in the race before eventually slipping into top gear and stretching clear inside the final two furlongs for what turned out ultimately to be a snug win.
Joey completed his double in the 10-furlong race. Kobayashi looked set for victory when he collared long-time leader Man Of Steel but Joey delivered Con McSweeney’s charge Dan’s Your Man with a perfectly timed run to deny him.
