All invited to careers day in Kildangan
THOSE interested in pursuing a career in the thoroughbred industry are invited to register now to attend the Godolphin Ireland Careers Event at Kildangan Stud on Sunday week, October 13th.
Starting at 9.45am and running until noon, the event includes an industry exhibition (featuring trade stands from some major racing and breeding organisations), a stud tour and stallion show.
There will also be a thoroughbred careers discussion chaired by racing analyst Sarah Lynam and a panel consisting of Sylvia O’Donnell (BBA Ireland), Conor Wixted (Goffs), Kim Kearns (Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital) and Eoin Walsh (NH jockey and Horse Racing Ireland).
Admission is free but registrations must be made via the Eventbrite website by 5pm next Friday. Those who attend will be offered free tickets for racing at Naas that afternoon.
Death of racehorse owner
PADDY McLoughney, who raced and sold Grade 1 winning hurdler Coolnagorna, died peacefully on Tuesday. From the parish of Ardcroney between Nenagh and Borrisokane in Co Tipperary, Paddy bought Coolnagorna for small money and the gelding won two bumpers for trainer Tom Hogan before being sold to join Jonjo O’Neill’s yard. Coolnagorna was ridden by A.P. McCoy to win the Challow Hurdle impressively at Newbury in December 2002.
Roscommon breeder dies in traffic accident
TOM Mulhern, breeder of high class chaser Vinndication, died in a car accident on his way to Roscommon races on Monday. He was 74. From Boyle in Co Roscommon, Tom was also involved in sport horse breeding and owned the Irish draught stallion Ardcarne Boy.
Fatal injury for Triple Threat
NATIONAL Hunt stallion Triple Threat sustained a fatal injury in his paddock at Capital Stud in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny, on Monday. Stud owner Ger O’Neill said: “The whole Capital Stud team is devastated by the news. He was very popular in his first season here and we were looking forward to covering many more mares with him in future, but sadly it wasn’t to be. “However, we look forward to seeing his first Irish foals arrive next year and we’re confident they will represent him well in the sales ring and on the racecourse in the coming years.”
The French-bred stallion is best known as sire of Grade 3-winning novice chaser Mister Policeman.
Rathbride stud is
left unsold at auction
THE 200-acre Curragh stud farm owned by Steve Parkin was not sold at this week’s auction. The Rathbride property had a guide price of €4.5 million but was withdrawn at €4.1 million and is “currently under active negotiation” according to Coonan Property.
Barzalona leaves Godolphin for Aga Khan
MICKAEL Barzalona has been appointed first jockey to the Aga Khan in France next year. He has been based with Godolphin for the past 12 years. On Sunday he will ride the Aga Khan’s highly-regarded Zarigana in the Prix Marcel Boussac.
Two Irish declared
for Velka Pardubicka
COKO Beach (Gordon Elliott) and Streets Of Doyen (John McConnell) have been declared to run in next Sunday’s Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic. Keith Donoghue will ride Coko Beach and Alex Harvey is on board Streets Of Doyen.
Coolmore repeats PTP Incentive
FOLLOWING the success of last season’s initiative, the Coolmore National Hunt division will repeat its Point-to-Point Incentive for the new point-to-point season, which begins this weekend. Once again, breeders of an open four-year-old or five-year-old only Irish point-to-point maiden winner during the new season, sired by any Coolmore NH stallion (past or present), will receive a €1,000 credit. This credit can be applied towards the purchase of any nomination to a Coolmore NH sire during the 2025 breeding season. Breeders can accumulate multiple credits, although only one may be used per nomination.
