Irish raider Mahler Mission finished a brave second in the valuable Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury on Saturday.

Trained by John McConnell and ridden by Ben Harvey, Mahler Mission (15/2) looked the most likely winner for much of the three and a quarter mile race but could not match the finishing kick of Datsalrightgino (16/1) who benefited from a hold-up ride from Gavin Sheehan and scored by almost four lengths for trainer Jamie Snowden.

Afterwards McConnell revealed that the runner-up had lost his two front shoes during the race.

The well-backed Monbeg Genius was over six lengths back in third, with Eldorado Allen two lengths further away in fourth. The 4/1 favourite Complete Unknown finished 10th.
