THE weather looks like being a factor in the US action again this weekend.
The Arlington Million meeting at Colonial Downs has been moved to Sunday.
There is a smaller field than usual, and for a Grade 1, with Godolphin’s Nations Pride dominating the six runners. He has however been beaten on his two US runs this summer.
Ancient Rome from Charlie Hills, and the seven-year-old Highland Chief, now with Graham Motion, who began his career with Paul Cole and both owned by Fitri Hay add some international flavour.
The other feature, the Grade 2 Beverly D Stakes, has a distinctly Canadian feel with Irish-bred Fev Rover and 2023 King’s Plate winner Moira heading just six runners again.
Following a pair of consecutive defeats to kick off her six-year-old campaign, Fev Rover should get back with a win.
The Grade 2 Secretariat Stakes for three-year-olds has no overseas contenders in its field of nine, but Frankie Dettori partners Grade 3 Penn Mile Stakes winner First World War for Brendan Walsh. The Graham Motion-trained Trikari (John Velazquez) looks the one on his Grade 1 Belmont Derby win.
Saratoga
At Saratoga, weather permitting, turf action takes centre stage too, though it may also be moved to Sunday.
Held over from last weekend, the Saratoga Derby now looks Legend Of Time’s to lose with the absence of Ballydoyle’s Diego Velazquez.
Charlie Appleby relies on Ottoman Fleet in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap over mile but he has to contend with the Lope De Vega four-year-old Carl Spackler (Tyler Gaffalione) from Chad Brown’s barn.
The Godolphin runner has had a profitable spell in the US with a Grade 3 and Grade 2 win at Churchill Downs.
Del Mar’s feature, the Yellow Ribbon Handicap for fillies, is headed by Awtaad’s star Anisette.
A three-time Grade 1 winner, Anisette attempts to add another stakes victory to her CV and showed no signs of rust when returning from a five-month layoff, beating some of California’s best turf fillies and mares in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita in May.
She has to give upwards of 6lb to her five rivals.
