2.05 Bar One Racing Drinmore Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m 4f
Croke Park: Made a smart start over fences here last time, his trainer noting he’ll come on from that. He shaped like a drop back in trip might suit, and his Grade 3 win as a novice hurdler came over today’s trip.
Firefox: You couldn’t fault his chase debut over this trip at Down Royal, especially considering the Grade 2-placed runner-up. Jack Kennedy obviously agrees, and the class of his novice hurdle campaign adds to his appeal.
Gorgeous Tom: Two from three over fences, one of them a Grade 3, with a fall in between. Today’s rivals are a higher calibre than he’s faced before, so more is required.
Heart Wood: The most experienced of these over fences, winning a Grade 3 in February, placing in the Mildmay and drawing seven lengths clear on return in a listed event. The only concern is the trip as his best form comes over further.
Stellar Story: A quick return following his Grade 2 win at Punchestown seven days ago, when his jumping wasn’t perfect, and he only had two rivals to beat. That came over three miles, as did his Grade 1 over hurdles, so this trip is a worry.
Shecouldbeanything: The sole mare in the field comes here on the back of a four-timer. More is required in this company, though her jumping will stand to her.
Conclusion
Class and form over this trip sees Firefox get the vote, with Croke Park currently looking good value to take runners-up honours. Gorgeous Tom is on the up and Heart Wood’s form is strong, but the trip looks questionable.
