2.10 Irish Stallion Farms EBF (Fillies) Maiden 7f
Machnamh can build on a promising debut run at the Curragh last Sunday. Jim Bolger’s filly made eyecatching late gains in the maiden won by Run Ran Run, coming from an unpromising position to finish within two and a half lengths of Fozzy Stack’s horse. Out again quickly, she should show the benefit of that experience and race fitness now.
Beauty Bella is another with race fitness on side and there was plenty to like about her seasonal debut second to You Send Me earlier this month at Cork. That represented a step up on her debut sixth at Dundalk and she can progress again. Dermot Weld’s filly Tanaiyla should be competitive but she has had plenty of goes and lacks the scope for progression compared to the aforementioned pair.

Empty Metaphor could be tough to beat off the back of a good effort to finish fourth in the 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on his seasonal debut. He was a 100/1 shot on the day, and sometimes that sort of effort can get overrated, but there was a lot to like about the way he laid up with the pace and briefly challenged in the straight. He faded back into fourth late on, but it was a big step forward from his two efforts at Dundalk last term and he takes a big step down in class now.
Change Signs is an obvious danger. Paddy Twomey’s colt was maybe a little bit disappointing when third to Broadhurst at Dundalk first time up but he is very likely to come forward now. Winston Spencer is another to note after a promising effort first time up, finishing seventh to Shadowed at the Curragh.

Karlsberg performed creditably on her seasonal debut and may be able to go one better for trainer Shane Crawley.
Racing just in behind two front-runners taking each other on at Leopardstown, the five-year-old got a little outpaced early in the straight but she battled on admirably when challenged by those coming from further back, holding on to second position behind Cristal Cleere. That horse won again at the track since and Karlsberg has further scope to improve now, given this will be just her fourth start over a mile.
Any Dream Will Do could be a threat off a mark of 74. Willie McCreery’s filly went close off a 4lb higher mark in a Gowran Park handicap last term and on similar ground, she could go well on seasonal debut.
Watch out for Emmet Mullins’ Lord Vader as well. He got upset in the stalls on his stable debut at Leopardstown and ran poorly after, but he is better than that effort judged on his previous form in Britain when he was placed on three of his six starts for John Ryan.

In a race where a few of the likely main contenders are drawn wide, it might be worth taking a chance on Willie McCreery’s newcomer Fernao. A four-year-old colt, it clearly hasn’t been plain sailing but he’s by Frankel and is a half brother to the high class Al Wukair. This isn’t a particularly strong maiden so he might just have enough class to make a winning start.
Texas Sun, Gambe Veloci and Secret Spy have all shown ability from limited starts so far but will all have to come from wide berths. Of the trio, Texas Sun might emerge best. Ger Lyons’s four-year-old found only Milestone Payment too good in a Killarney maiden last year.
SELECTION: FERNAO

Tosen Wish could be the answer to a competitive looking mile handicap. He has had as many runs as he has had trainers so far in his career but he really caught the eye when winning at Dundalk earlier in the year, producing smart late sectionals to score comfortably, despite running greenly in the process. Last season he beat a useful pair in Neo Soul and Life In Colour in Navan, and this talented sort could be better than a mark of 89 on his first start for Ado McGuinness.
There are a couple of other unexposed types in here, but Laughifuwant makes plenty of appeal off a mark of 85. He’s been an excellent servant for Gerry Keane and while not the force he once was, he has come right down the weights. There was enough in his staying-on fifth at Cork recently to suggest he can be more than competitive now, with the step up to a mile also interesting. Rahmi is one of those unexposed types, and is an intriguing contender on his first run for the in-form Johnny Murtagh team, having previously been in training with Francis-Henri Graffard.

A tentative vote goes to Picture Of A City. Andy Oliver’s colt showed up reasonably well in a mile maiden at the Curragh last September when starting slowly, meeting traffic in the run but eventually running on to finish fourth to Starry Heavens. That contest has worked out reasonably well since.
Joseph O’Brien’s newcomers, Alexandra Gardens and Etna Rosso, are interesting and could put up a good show but the second vote goes to Master Donovan, who ran better than his finishing position/beaten distance suggests when fifth to Fleetfoot in a Leopardstown maiden. This looks a softer heat so he has a chance if he can step forward again.

This can go to Barometer. John Murphy’s gelding was progressive last season, hitting the frame on five of his seven starts, and he also didn’t disgrace himself over hurdles over the winter, notably finishing fourth to Arctic Bresil in a maiden hurdle at Cork. He shouldn’t lack for race fitness, unlike a few of his rivals here, and a mark of 62 looks workable given his progressive profile on the level.
Secret Rock has a similar profile for Tony Martin. He won a maiden hurdle at Wexford last month and then finished fourth back on the flat at Navan. He was well beaten on that latter occasion but he was racing on heavy ground and today’s surface and shorter trip might suit him more.
