1.40 Irish EBF Auction Series Fillies Maiden 5f 164yds

This maiden for fillies who were bought at public auction for €30,000 or less could represent a nice opportunity for recent Leopardstown runner-up Ciao For Now to get off the mark at the second attempt for Jessica Harrington. She wasn’t blessed with daylight on that occasion and could be sharp enough to cope with the step back in trip from seven furlongs.

Kiki Roberts, third at Bellewstown on her second and most recent start in early July, should be bang there, while Willie McCreery-trained newcomer Lively Set (bought for €28,000) has a useful pedigree, being out of a smart mare who has already produced sprint maiden winner Cavallo Pazzo.

For all that it isn’t ideal conceding weight to all rivals, this could prove a more straightforward assignment for Storm Miami than last time when beaten a length and a quarter in fourth in a listed event at the Curragh. The form of her nose second to Tiger Belle in the Listed Marwell Stakes two starts ago looks stronger now after that rival won a ParisLongchamp Group 3 on Thursday, while the fourth-placed Cherry Blossom bolted up in a Curragh maiden on her next start before finishing second in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes. The fact Colin Keane rides Mr Saturday, who had looked smart prior to a disappointing Curragh return three weeks ago, arguably isn’t promising but perhaps connections are simply keen to utilise Jack Kearney’s 7lb claim when the filly is set to carry 9st 9lb.

Gloucester coped well with the ease in the ground at Cork when winning a maiden there 15 days ago and this looks a logical next step for the Donnacha O’Brien-trained colt. Recent winners Megary (Gavin Cromwell) and Lia Fail (Mick Mulvany) add further depth to a race that is fairly tightly knit.

The form of Cavallo Pazzo’s second-placed effort at Tipperary on his first start since joining Joseph O’Brien has taken a few knocks since but it would be disappointing if he doesn’t prove better than his mark of 68. A stiffer finish at Navan than was the case last time could well be more in his favour and he won’t be inconvenienced by any rain. It remains to be seen what part of the track the main action will take place on, but those who fought out the finish in this race 12 months ago were drawn 20, 11, 17, 18, 23, 24, 22, 16 and 19. The selection is drawn on that same side in stall 19.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Universally, drawn in stall one, but he has fired a couple of warning shots the last twice and deserves a change of luck. Distillate, who had his measure when the pair were first and second at Naas last Sunday, is drawn next door in stall two.

SELECTION: CAVALLO PAZZO

A break of 161 days since his last start is off-putting but there’s a chance that The Highway Rat could have a class edge over these rivals and he gets a tentative nod to defy a rating of 96 in this seven-runner affair. All five of his wins have come on the all-weather, hence his 6lb higher rating on that surface, but he looked perfectly effective on the grass when runner-up at the Curragh on his only other start of the year in March.

Plenty of these arrive here in good form and have chances. Parting Glass, a three-year-old who runs off bottom weight for Fozzy Stack, failed to catch fire at the Curragh last time but has finished first and second on her two visits to Navan and may not be far away again.

Ger Lyons and Colin Keane have been frequent visitors to the winner’s enclosure lately and should have strong claims with Dumb Love here after she got back on track when third at Naas last month. This track and trip should suit her well and she has enough experience under her girth to open her account at the fourth attempt. It doesn’t look an overly deep race and her mark of 74 means she’s fully entitled to be in the thick of things.

Spirit Of Paradise improved plenty from her debut to her second and most recent run at Gowran when fourth to Letiza. However, it might be telling that Jessica Harrington’s stable jockey Shane Foley instead rides the yard’s Antique Store, who was tailed off on her only start at Killarney but apparently went wrong behind and was found to be clinically abnormal post race. She could leave that run behind now.

Alfalfa caught the eye coming home well from off the pace over a shorter trip at Gowran 17 days ago and the step back up to 10 furlongs around here could see him break his duck at the 12th time of asking for Tim Doyle. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock for a five-year-old and should cope with any rain just fine.

Mick Halford and Tracey Collins have their string in excellent form and have solid claims of striking while the iron is hot with Kampala Beach. A 4lb rise for that four-year-old’s recent Leopardstown success looks pretty fair and Jamie Powell is an excellent booking for this apprentice-only affair.

A 3lb nudge up the weights may not be enough to stop Red Trail from following up her last-time-out success at Gowran. Conor Stone-Walsh maintains his partnership with the Andrew McNamara-trained filly, who has already won over this course and distance and, crucially, remains in the 47-65 grade.

Slieve Bearnagh has yet to win since October 2021 but has tumbled down the weights to an attractive mark of 48 and has the assistance of Jamie Powell for an in-form stable. Party Moon ran respectably last time at Gowran behind the selection and could yet improve from that showing.

There were plenty of positives to take from Earth Dance’s debut at the Curragh a fortnight ago when third to a filly trained by Dermot Weld and a 98-rated performer with listed and Group 3 blacktype. This does not looks as deep a race and natural improvement from his first run should make him tough to beat.

Tommy Thug and Open To Question have shown promise in defeat but the biggest threat could come in the shape of Joseph O’Brien’s Right Now, who was beaten just half a length in third at the Curragh last time and has threatened to get off the mark, notably when second earlier in the season at Sligo.
