IT’S a big day for Harry Fry and the Noel Fehily Racing Syndicate as they have live chances in feature contests at Punchestown and Sandown, on the final day of the Irish and British National Hunt seasons.
Love Envoi travels over to take on the Grade 1 Coolmore N.H. Sires Mogul Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle (3.50) while, back in Sandown, the kept-fresh Revels Hill has a live chance in the Bet365 Gold Cup (2.15).
Love Envoi bids to end a fine season, in which her only defeat came at the hands of the great Honeysuckle at Cheltenham. In fact the only defeats of her career have come at Grade 1 level, having finishing second to Brandy Love in the Novice Mares Championship Final at Fairyhouse last year. She meets that Willie Mullins-trained mare again, but is in much better shape form-wise and has a favourite’s chance to add a second Grade 1 victory.
“The race isn’t far off a repeat of the Mares’ Hurdle, albeit without Honeysuckle, which we’re relieved about,” Fry told The Irish Field. “We were obviously delighted with the run that day, we pushed her all the way, but it’s all about winning in this game, so we’ll be trying our hardest and hopefully she has a very good chance.”
Johnny Burke has ridden Love Envoi on all but one of her nine track starts but misses out today due to injury, with Danny Mullins taking over. Much of the analysis of the Mares’ Hurdle suggested Love Envoi was given an advantageous ride from the front by Burke, but Fry doesn’t think that should take away from her performance as such.
“Johnny gave her a great ride but we know she is uncomplicated and if the race was run differently, I’d like to think she’d have run just as good a race. We take nothing for granted. Her only defeats have come in Grade 1s so it would be nice to get her in front in another - she certainly deserves to.”
Revels Hill, to be ridden by Kevin Brogan, is a 7/1 shot in the Bet365 Gold Cup, which has been the plan for him for some time, with the attraction of having a fresh horse on spring ground.
“We’re hopeful of a big run,” Fry said. “We deliberately kept him back through the winter so we’d have a fresher horse this time of year and he should enjoy spring ground. He has a nice racing weight and he has been really consistent.
Elsewhere at Sandown, old comrades Shark Hanlon and Rachael Blackmore will combine again, when Hewick takes on the bet365 Oaksey Chase (2.50) over an extended two miles and six furlongs.
Hanlon had been toying with the idea of running his stable star firstly at Aintree, then in the Punchestown Gold Cup this week before committing to returning to the scene of his break-out success in the Bet365 Gold Cup here 12 months ago. He was a 6/4 shot yesterday evening in a race in which he is 10lb clear of his nearest rival on ratings.
