ALL eyes will be on unbeaten star juvenile City Of Troy in today’s Group 1 Native Trail’s Dewhurst Stakes (2.00) but Aidan O’Brien has warned that soft ground is a concern for next year’s 2000 Guineas favourite.
Coolmore’s son of Justify blitzed his rivals when last seen winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket’s July Course 13 weeks ago, and was a late non-runner from last month’s Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes due to rain-softened ground.
City Of Troy is currently no bigger than 5/2 at the head of the market for next year’s opening British classic back at Newmarket.
Speaking at the Curragh on Thursday, O’Brien told Racing TV: “We’re very happy with City Of Troy. Obviously the ground is not going to be ideal for him. He’s a beautiful-moving horse but we’re running out of options.
“This will be his last run of the year and he needs to have it. We’ll probably run regardless [of the ground]. It won’t be ideal but we’re very happy with everything he’s doing at home since when we had initially planned on running him in the National Stakes.”
On stablemate Henry Adams, who will also run in the Dewhurst after a solid fourth in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp 13 days ago, O’Brien added: “He’s in good form. It was a long gap between runs for him from when we won the Tyros Stakes to when he was fourth in France last time. He ran a lovely race.
“I think he’ll handle an ease in the ground, the trip shouldn’t be a problem and Newmarket should be fine for him. We’re looking forward to seeing him run again.”
O’Brien is bidding to win the Dewhurst for a record-equalling eighth occasion.
