THE World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) young horse championship season is nearly complete after Ermelo (dressage) and Lanaken (show jumping). Just this week, the Irish Sport Horse team for the final championship (eventing) at Le Lion d’Angers was announced.

Another fixture was last weekend’s WBFSH Studbooks Global Champions Tour Trophy, hosted at Jan Tops’ Valkenswaard base featuring Nations Cup-style finals for five, six, seven and eight-year-olds and a sires competition.

After another successful Lanaken, where two medals were won by the Bravo Hughes and Ballypatrick team pair of HHS Mercedes (gold) and BP Royalty (bronze) in the seven-year-old final, how did the ISH teams do at Valkenswaard?

Again, it was the seven-year-olds that had the best show, with Dunboyne (Lt. Michaeli Byrne), Dougie Drea (Emma O’Dwyer) and HHS Ice Flo (Molly Hughes Bravo), placing second in the final. It was the first ISH podium finish at these championships since they began last year.

Overall leading studbooks? There was a strong showing by the Selle Français (two wins) and Denmark’s DWB studbooks in the four age finals, while the French book also provided the horsepower for the winning sire team.

Leading sires? Comme Il Faut and Cape Coral RBF Z both had two prize winners at Valkenswaard, while nine separate sires produced the Ermelo medallist dressage horses.

One horse missing from the Valkenswaard selected horses was HHS Mercedes, given a break after her Lanaken win. Her stable companion, HHS Ice Flo, with recent Agricultural Studies graduate Molly Hughes Bravo aboard, had the best ISH result in the seven-year-old final.

Make a living

“It was super, because Molly rode both mares all year, so that was nice that she’s produced them. What I’ve been trying to do with Molly is to teach her to produce horses, because, for me, producing horses is how I can make a living. If you can’t make a living out of it, you go nowhere,” her mother Marion told The Irish Field this week.

“She won the Boomerang this year, now we’ve progressed to a world championship (Lanaken) and these Global championships, so that’s a massive step-up.

“And sure, Mikey [Pender] is as good as ever, he’s so reliable and Max Foley gave us a great hand during the show. We brought a few greener horses to Valkenswaard and they all did quite well.”

Belgian-bred

Sven Hadley’s Belgian-bred stallion Phenomene Blue VDM (Diamant de Semilly) had another good championship for a second weekend in a row, scoring three top-three places in the Sires class.

As a Traditional Irish Horse, Susan Malee’s Carrabeg The Full Irish was a rare sight at these championships.

The home-bred Ardcolum Duke stallion, produced by Co Mayo-based Austrian rider Katharina Wilding, was supported in his travels by the Traditional Irish Horse Association.

“The TIHA would like to congratulate Susan and Carrabeg The Full Irish on a great performance at Valkenswaard. It is brilliant to see a young TIH stallion performing at this level,” said TIHA chairman Kevin Noone.

“We were delighted to support Susan, her genuine enthusiasm could be clearly seen in her interview with the IHB and, with owners like her, the TIH is in a good place.”

Two medals at Lanaken and a top-three place at Valkenswaard, will the ISH studbook team match that at Le Lion d’Angers?
