FOLLOWING on from the buoyant trade recently witnessed at Cavan, lively interest is anticipated next week for Cavan Equestrian’s one-day Performance Horse & Pony Sale which takes place next Thursday, June 22nd, with 80 lots of show jumpers, eventers and hunters forward.
The four-year-olds represent the biggest division with 52 lots offered while the pony sector comprises 18 lots. Numerically, three sires account for two lots apiece - Sligo Candy Boy (Lots 46 and 75), Cobra 18 (Lots 36 and 49) and Luidam (Lots 51 and 64).
Ponies
Lot 2 Doneen Ginger, 9yo ch m 128cms. Described as a beautiful blood 128cm pony, Ginger is said to be an exceptional mover with three excellent paces. She has 50 SJI points to her credit and has competed up to 90cm level with huge potential to continue up the ranks. She has enjoyed going cross-country and pony clubbing, a real pleasure of a pony to work with. Only for sale as no rider available.
Lot 3 Smoker, 16yo ch m 128cms. Broken and riding. Registered with SJI and competing weekly. Placed in the 128 Pony Premier at Banner Equestrian. Winner of the 128 80cm interprovincial in Garranmore and second in 128 90cm in Ruan. Described as a very reliable and consistent pony, super for an U10’s rider, always in the ribbons. This pony is described as one to take a pony rider to the next level.
Lot 7 Hedgefield Minstrel, 9yo b g 137cms by Astral Heartbreaker out of Dryer Golden Bubbles (Dawnway Sunny Boy). This Welsh pony has SJI points, from newcomers to one-metre and has schooled 110cm cross-country, and pony clubbed. Has done it all including equitation classes, showing classes, working hunter classes. Quiet to shoe, box and load, clip and groom. Described as having a very quiet temperament suitable for children to handle. Competed in the Equijump Ltd Spring Tour warm-up tour, placing fifth at Galway Equestrian and posting a clear round at Ard Chuain.
Lot 8 Woodlands CWCI, 5yo gr m 136cms by Robe Dark Knight out of Gleiniant Vanya (Tillybo Merlyn). This talented Welsh x Connemara mare is described as ‘bombproof’ with 18 SJI points to date. She has completed working hunters, hunted, done cross-country and local show jumping leagues. Never refused a jump or put a foot wrong with a huge scopey jump. ‘Cookie’ has been produced slowly and shows great potential in many disciplines, said to go far in the right hands. Ridden by both a seven-year-old and a 12-year-old. Easy to shoe, box, clip and hack out.
Lot 9 Kiltormer Jack, 12yo gr g 133cms. Smart-looking pony with three even paces who rides in a nice outline. Has done pony club, rallies and camp, minimus, eventing, dressage, show jumping and games. Amazing hunter, regularly hunted by a 10-year-old girl. Also very good in traffic, said to be an ideal pony to bring a child through 60s, 70s and 80s.
Older horses and all rounders
Lot 19 The Wizard of Oz, 14yo gr g 168cm. A lovely dapple grey 16.2hh gelding described as an ideal amateur horse that has hunted, show jumped at riding club level with 15 SJI points on record. Hacks out alone and in company. Easy to box, shoe and clip. This horse has said to be a real confidence-giver, super on the flat.
Lot 20 Ballycoog Heather Crest, 12yo gr m 163cms by Grange Bouncer out of Ballycoog Sea Diamond (Sea Crest). Heather is described as a Class 1 ID mare, a super fun horse with three balanced paces. She is quiet to box, shoe and clip. She has 10 SJI points to date and has lightly hunted and evented. She has done Riding Club dressage, excelled in Irish Daught performance classes and is very well established on the flat. Said to be a lovely, kind mare in every way with no vices.
Lot 29 Ballagan Bouncer, 7yo gr m 165cms by Lurgans Grange Bouncer (ID). Mia (ISH) has been produced slowly, carefully and is a super all-rounder. Described as professionally schooled and rides in a frame on the flat. Mia has competed in SJI up to 90cm and has SJI points with multiple double clears in Cavan Show and placing fourth at Mullingar. Enjoys cross-country and thought to excel in any type of hunting home, proving brave to date, hacks alone or in company and has completed multiple beach rides. Mia has competed in local country shows in both working hunter and show hunter classes, winning Dundonald’s medium weight show hunter class in 2022. Easy to catch, shoe and travel.
Lot 31 Nablensky, 6yo b g 172cms by Cornet Obolensky out of Nassinora (Nabab de Reve). ‘Harry’ is a 17hh gelding that jumped up to 1.20m level. Described as a lovely forward going horse with a floating canter and excellent flat work with three rhythmic gait, easy flying changes. A scopey jumper suitable for a novice or professional as he is brave and easy but also said to have the quality to jump bigger tracks.
Lot 44 Silverspring Coolfinn, 5yo d m 168cms by Coolfinn Dynamite. ‘Ruby’ is described as an eye-catching dun coloured mare. An all-rounder, she is extremely quiet. Competes at SJI 90cms tracks comfortably and is very brave hunter-trialling. Competes in Riding Club activities and enjoys beach rides. An uncomplicated mare, easy to load, shoe and clip with no vices.
Lot 46 Oxview Joy, 5yo b m 166cms by Sligo Candy Boy out of Fahy Joy (Captain Clover). This very athletic blood mare was reserve champion in the 2023 Northern Ireland Festival. Placed in Stepping Stones League with junior rider this year. Described as very brave but careful jumper, ridden by a 14-year-old girl.
Four-year-olds
Lot 52 Priestown Coupe, 4yo g 163cms by Coupe De Coeur out of Wendoliene (Darco). This horse is described as an exceptional mover with a great temperament to match. He is showing good technique over a pole. Likely to excel in any equestrian sphere.
Lot 58 CSF Grand Sophie, 4yo b m 165cms by Grand Slam VDL out of CSF Scarlett (Ars Vivendi). CSF Grand Sophie is a blood type mare. Bred from the well renowned CSF Stud (breeders of CSF James Kann Cruz amongst other top performers), this young mare is backed and broken at the end of her three-year-old year, showing great potential for any equestrian sphere (eventing, show jumping etc.) Clean set of X-rays and easy to handle.
Lot 59 Lackamore Messenger, 4yo dk bay g 170cms by Dallas VDL out of Ballyogan Bridie (Shian Moon). Very quiet to handle and pick out his hooves. Easy to box and travels well. ‘Rolo’ has a lovely jump with quick reflexes and a lot of power. The dam has 137 SJI points. The sire Dallas VDL competed at 1.60m. Dallas is by Ard VDL Douglas x Darco, all have jumped at 1.60m level.
Lot 62 Derryhiney Clover, 4yo d m 158cms. This super smart dun mare has a full season hunting done with the Leitrim Harriers, hunted by teenage girl. Proven to be very brave and honest.She has schooled cross-country and attended training shows. Described as a super easy type, easy to shoe, box and clip. Very good in traffic. Hacks alone or in company. Will be a ideal teenagers/ladies all-rounder. No vices.
Three-year-olds
Lot 71 unnamed 3yo b f 165cms by Colandro out of Crosskeys Lady (Limmerick). Hailing from a good damline that includes the four-star eventer Black Ice, now competing in Germany. A striking filly with beautiful movement. Haltered and handled from birth, including regular paring by farrier. Crosskeys Lady jumped to 1.20m with Children on Horses, with family successfully eventing including Shenandoah (GB), Black Ice (GER), Malcolm X (IRL) and Bikini (GB).Colandro is a successful sire with progeny sold all over the world.
Lot 74 unnamed 3yo b f 165cms by EHS Land Ahoy out of Drumagoland Hermes (Hermes de Reve). Second dam Clear View Bay is the dam of Stoneybridge Lady Douglan, 1.10m show jumper, and the dam of Drumagoland Bay, dam of five-star event performer, Off The Record who has competed all over the world. Also in the pedigree is the 1.35m performer Drumagoland Chip.
