BRINGING the curtain down on a busy sales year, next week sees Cavan’s final fixture of 2024. Running over three days, the mixed sale offers a full and varied catalogue of ponies, performance horses, hunters, youngstock/foals and Irish Draughts.
Kicking off on Wednesday, the opening action will focus on the performance stock, which includes numerous horses with competition form, as well as a selection of hunters, ponies and three-year-olds.
Looking deeper into the latter sector, the three-year-olds look especially strong, and among them are immediate maternal relations to the five-star event horses, Cavalier Crystal and OBOS O’Reilly.
When examining the sires on day one, it comes as no surprise to see Vivant Van de Heffinck at the top of the numerical list, but this time around, he shares the honours with the traditionally bred The Rock (Ard Grandpa/Glidawn Diamond).
As usual, Thursday’s young stock division incorporates a special foal collection, which features foals with especially notable pedigrees. Blacktype maternal lines appear in number throughout the day and are highlighted by close relations to top drawer jumpers, as well as the five-star event horse, Kilronan. In this sector, it is Sligo Candy Boy who leads the stallion lists, with nine progeny forward, closely followed by Lagans OBOS Quality with seven.
Finally, Friday’s session focuses on Irish Draught breeding stock, among which are a selection of foals, yearlings and broodmares. With five offspring holding entries, three sires stand out in this session, namely Cappa Cassanova, Coillarach Scirocco and Scrapboy.
