AS the sale’s season slowly gets underway, the action moves to Cavan next Wednesday. It is the venue’s first sport horse sale since December last year, and organisers will be relieved to be back up and running.

Of course, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, the bulk of horses are likely to be sold online, but buyers can pre-register to attend in person.

The catalogue is varied, and there is sure to be plenty of competition for the 100 or so entries on offer. Many are listed with video footage, and this is being regularly updated. Among the standout lots on paper are several older horses with show jumping form, while one of the few three-year-olds entered is Ballytemple Jackson, a colt by Womanizer out of a well-related mare by Harlequin du Carel.

The stallion list is diverse and, illustrating the diversity, no one sire is especially prominent. There are however two stallions with multiple progeny on offer, namely OBOS Quality (3) and Beach Ball (2).

Ponies

Lot 5 Megland Minuet, reg 6 yo ch m 122cms by Borderland Chardonnay out of Megland Merrydream (Willowdene Coriander). Standing approximately 12hh, this diminutive individual is registered with the British Riding Pony (NPS). She is currently a lead-rein show pony, but as her education has progressed, she is also thought to be suitable for first ridden classes. She has, according to her vendors “correct conformation and oozes wow factor” and is only for sale due to lack of a rider.

Lot 25 Lisgreen Cavalier, reg 4 yo ro g 148cms by Mullentine Cavalier out of Shannon Silver Bella (Straboe Prince). This Connemara/sport horse cross gelding is a full-sister to Lisgreen Annie, winner of the Horse Sport Ireland loose jumping class in Cavan in 2019. He is now broken and riding, has schooled cross-country and looks a promising prospect.

Lot 26 Wyncroft Superb, reg 5 yo gr g 148cms by Sweetwall Captain Courageous out of Morning Call (Monaghanstown Wyncroft). This full Connemara pony has competed at a few training shows, proving to be brave and careful. He is described as a real all-rounder, and is only on the market due to lack of rider.

Lot 39 Clonlaras Beach Ball, reg 8 yo b m 160cms by Beachball out of Charlies Midnight Mist (HHS Br Charlton). This smart mare has been slowly produced to win 40 SJI points to date (38 recorded). Lot 61 Lagans Cruz Noone, reg 5 yo ch m 170cms by OBOS Quality out of Lagans Noone (Cruising). For those looking for a big, traditionally bred horse, this good-moving mare could fit the bill. She has competed in a few training shows, is a big mover, and thought suitable to excel in the show ring, either as a weight horse or a working hunter. She has a great attitude to her work, is eager to learn and could also make a top-class hunter.

Lot 64 Boleybawn Aiken, reg 5 yo ch g 173cms by Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet out of HHS Anna (Andiamo Aiken). Boleybawn Aiken is a big good-looking gelding with a super step and an excellent jump. He is a maternal brother to 2019 RDS four-year-old show jumping Boleybawn Bella, and is showing unlimited scope, great respect for the jump and is very rideable. At the time of writing, he has competed in a training show at Barnadown, but should have attended more shows by time of sale.

Lot 72 Brienne K, reg 5 yo bl m 168cms by Colin Diamond out of Bambi K (Maximum Clearance TB). Described as a ‘sweet and easy’ mare, the well-related Brienne K was professionally broken after Christmas. A mare with potential, she has three excellent paces, together with a super jump.

Lot 74 Ringwood Razzmatazz, reg 5 yo ch mare 158cms by Adieu Z out of Ringwood Audacity (Sheer Danzig TB). Razzmatazz was lightly broken in the autumn and turned away for the winter. Four-year-olds

Lot 83 Sativus, reg 4 yo ch f 168cms by Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet out of - Barnadown Luxie (Lux Z). Bred to perform, this attractive filly has been recently backed. A serious brood mare prospect when her competition days are over, she is out of a full-sister to the American-based five-star event horse Fernhill Fugitive (Philip Dutton), while her own siblings include SRS Catwalk (135 SJI points) and Be On Time.

Lot 88 Roscrib Jige, reg 4 yo b f 162cms by Exquis Powerfee out of Diamond Clover Betty (Flagmount King). This filly is a half-sister to the Grade A show jumper Roscrib De Ross (1.40m) who, under Michael Roche and Peter Smyth competed in the international classes at Millstreet. Recently broken and showing great promise, she is considered to have the makings of a super all-rounder, and may suit a mother and daughter to share.

Three-year-olds

Lot 95 Ballytemple Jackson, reg 3 yo gr c 163cms by Womanizer out of Newmarket Wonder One (Harlequin Du Carel). Described as an eye-catching and very athletic stallion with an excellent temperament, Ballytemple Jackson carries a smart pedigree. By Womanizer, a son of Heartbreaker, this colt is a half-brother to Newmarket Trooper (1.35m) and to the American-based SRS Status (Newmarket Joker). The latter, who was ridden by Sophie Richards, won the four-year-old class in the RDS in 2014, while other half-siblings include Newmarket Peaches and the international event horse Ballygriffin Harvey. This colt is a nice horse to work with and, careful over a pole, he combines super balance, technique, and movement.
