THIS writer was a bit taken aback to see Clare Abbott advertise the Gatcombe gelding Mr Mighty for sale recently, but fears that she was leaving the world of eventing for that of show jumping were assuaged in a ‘phone call.
“No, it’s nothing like that,” said the Co Down Olympian. “Mr Mighty is the only Advanced horse I have and it’s too difficult giving him the runs he needs, which would be mostly down south or in England, while also doing the best for the young horses we are bringing along, more and more of whom are home-bred.”
‘We’ are Abbott and partner Gareth Carlisle and, currently, they are not only breeding and producing horses at their yard in Ballynahinch, but are building a house.
Abbott is also keen to get more involved in coaching, having been awarded a BHSI certificate in October.
“It certainly wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t sell Mr Mighty, but he’s a horse that needs to compete regularly to produce his best. We’ve had him since he was four and he’s now 11, so the time is right to move him on. He would be perfect for a young rider aiming for teams.”
