THE Austin O’Connor-ridden Colorado Blue finished best of the Irish in 13th individually in the eventing competition at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and his Co Limerick breeder, Kate Jarvey, has another very smart sort on her hands in Diamond Mistress.
The dark bay Irish Sport Horse mare by the Holstein stallion Diarado won the Horse Sport Ireland-sponsored four-year-old young event horse final under Sian Coleman as the RDS National Championships got under way at a cold but dry Lambertstown on Tuesday.
Diamond Mistress, who won on a score of 97.4 marks (out of a maximum of 110), is one of two four-year-old fillies Jarvey bred from the Master Imp mare Shes My Master who is now competing at CCI3*-S level with Sweden’s Maya Andersson Gouveia having been previously ridden by Ian Hannon, Michael Ryan and Austin O’Connor. The other is by the thoroughbred Sula Blue and is named Masters Blue Horizon.
“I’m delighted with this mare who is not for sale,” said Jarvey. “She won both her qualifiers en route to this final and is entered in the four-year-old National Discovery class at Millstreet. Sian does a wonderful job with these young horses. She is a very sympathetic rider and gets on exceptionally well with mares.”
Diamond Mistress was second last to go in the field of 18 and up to then the lead on 96.1 was held by the traditionally bred brown gelding Inquisitor whose Co Kildare owner/breeder Bridget McGing was keeping a close eye on the scores coming up online through the Equipe show management system.
Ridden by Ian Cassells, who had partnered four winners at Kilguilkey on Saturday, Inquisitor is by the underutilised and now sadly deceased thoroughbred stallion Coroner. He is out of the Coolcorron Cool Diamond mare Diamond Fleck who competed at CCI2* level herself and is dam previously of the now-retired Pointilliste mare Diamond Pointe (CCI3*-S).
Inquisitor is also among the 27 entries for the National Discovery at Millstreet.
A bit slow into stride in the Derby Arena, the Silvano gelding MBF Silver Bridge finished third (94.9) under Nicola Ennis. Bred in Co Kilkenny by John Murphy, the ISH bay is out of the unraced Beneficial mare My Rochestown Lady.
MBF Silver Bridge is owned by Kansas-based Carrie Meehan of Gold To Blue Sporthorses. She and her mother Kandy were at Lambertstown on Tuesday as they were on a buying trip in Ireland and were visiting various breeders and producers around the country in the company of Patricia Hoey.
One of the pre-final favourites, the Louise Codd-ridden Chinook Eclipse gelding Hidden Eclipse had two fences down show jumping which saw him score 7.1 on this phase – compared to the 10.7 of Inquisitor and the 10.4 of both Diamond Mistress and MBF Silver Bridge. He finished fourth overall on 91.
