THE cob title at Tattersalls July Show headed west following Sunday’s championship success of Gold Nugget who was ridden by Amory McMahon for her mother Kate, breeder of the six-year-old Rockey Maguire gelding.

The bay always stood top of the line in a strong class of cobs not exceeding 155cms with another western combination of Philippa Scott riding Bill Bourns’s 2013 chesnut Pride Of Meath gelding, Gin Time, finishing second.

There were fewer forward in the class for cobs over 155cms where it was no great surprise to see the red rosette being presented to Brian Murphy on board Pat Loughlin’s well-known Irish Draught gelding The Peaky Blinder (by Rockrimmon Silver Diamond). The grey has a lot of experience behind him, unlike the second, Roisin Drury’s four-year-old Ballarin Cuchulainn (by Gortfree Hero).

In the championship, The Peaky Blinder stood reserve to Gold Nugget whose dam, King’s Hill Fancy (by Lord Americo) finished second in a mares’ maiden at the Belclare point-to-point in 2007 under William McMahon.

Coloured champion

The champion and reserve in Sunday’s coloured horse section at Tattersalls July Show both came from the well-filled over 158cms class with Nicky Corr’s Tom Tom standing ahead of the nine-year-old Cavalier Two For Joy gelding Carrigower Mourinho who was ridden for Noah Magee by Rosemary Connors.

The champion, a six-year-old skewbald gelding, is by the eventing stallion Centre Stage (CCI4*-S) and was bred in Co Down by Antoinette and Patrick Milligan out of the Sambesi mare Indie Anna who, in turn, was bred by Centre Stage’s owner, John Reid.

This is the family of Laras Song (CIC3*). The up to 158cms class was won by Tegan Ward’s 11-year-old skewbald gelding, Prince Luca.
