Two from two as LHK win the AIPC Stuarts Trophy
LHK Insurance has done it again in just one short week, winning their second tournament of the polo season last weekend at the AIPC’s second ground near Ashbourne, Co Meath.
LHK captain Colm Kelleher has been taking a chance with his seasoned team of Siobhan Herbst and Michael Connolly in adding the very young and still new -1 goal-handicapped Luca Moore.
The acquisition, however, is already paying off as Kelleher mounted a team that opened the season with a win for the Bunclody Perpetual Glass Trophy on the June Bank Holiday Weekend in Wexford and then did again last Sunday June, 13th, against the same team headed by William Clarke’s CJ Law.
Speaking with The Irish Field just after the final, won by LHK on 9 goals to 5.5, Lar Sheeran who was at the match said that newcomer Moore showed she had the talent for the big leagues if given the chance on a seasoned team.
An acquisition from Northern Ireland Polo Clubs, Luca showed her capabilities as a team player in scoring her own goal in the hotly contested final.
“If you play with good players, everybody improves and that is what you have here,” said Sheeran, tournament veteran and retired commentator. “The teamwork of LHK, the patron’s reading of his teammates, they all knew their positions and played as a team and that is what really made a difference. Luca (Moore) was as good as any 1-goal player and she is playing on -1. CJ Law as good as they were, and they have some beautiful players weren’t as cohesive.”
David Stone and his Pegus team including David J Stone, Mark Stone and Mark Ronan took on Tyrone’s Eamonn Laverty, Dan Laverty, Brad Rainford, Luca Moore and Brad Rainford, losing their subsidiary final on 5.5 goals to 4 while Wexford beat Rocklow in their Stuart’s Trophy final on 5 goals to 2.5.
The lower goal tournament for the All Hallows Cup was won by Sixt Car Rental on 12 goals to 10.5 from Moores.
