THE Betsy in Swords was the venue last Friday for this year’s AIRC North East Region annual awards night, when the presentations were made by the AIRC’s Elaine Dunne.
Providing a party ambience compared to the more formal atmosphere of previous years, the organising committee of Sarah Richardson (Boyneside), Maria Carrick (Cheval) and Lisa O’Brien (Killossery) included extras such as welcome drinks, a photo booth and €1,000 worth of TRI Equestrian vouchers.
Richardson was the recipient of the Club Member of the Year award, with her peers saying of the regional secretary: “Sarah handles the demanding responsibilities of managing the Region’s clubs, members and committees with remarkable patience and unwavering dedication. She is always willing to assist in any way she can, often going out of her way to ensure everything runs smoothly.
“Sarah constantly goes above and beyond, whether it’s organising events – the NER Festival was a shining example of her ability, as it was an amazing show – or supporting individuals behind the scenes. Beyond her organisational skills, Sarah is also a fantastic team player, fostering a positive environment and always being approachable for advice or help. Her tireless efforts make a significant difference and her dedication to the region is truly inspiring.”
Lisa O’Brien is not only secretary of Killossery, but was also the driving force behind their late April fixture, which took the title of Show of the Year.
“The Killossery Spring Show brought together riders of all levels for an exciting day of show jumping and showing, creating a great atmosphere that celebrated the sport and the hard work of everyone involved. The show took place in the fantastic Killossery Lodge Stud, which boasts top-class indoor and outdoor facilities and a beautiful pavilion for use by competitors.
“There was a fantastic array of prizes on offer in both the show jumping and showing rings. However, the highlight of the show this year was the presentation of the Sharon McCabe Memorial Trophy for supreme champion. The beautiful perpetual cup was awarded in honour of Sharon, who was a much-loved former chairperson and a true pillar of the riding club community.
“This special award added a meaningful touch to the event, making it even more memorable for riders and spectators. Competitors, family and friends gathered for champagne and food after the prize-giving ceremony. As if by design, the sun shone for the day.”

Club of the year
The award for Club of the Year was presented to representatives of Kilronan, “A small club with a big heart! Great encouragement and support are always at the forefront of what this great little club does, whether it is impromptu advice in the arena at home or out and about at shows.
“Weekly celebrations on social media are a given no matter how team members get on, there is always a positive vibe and it is clear that this club has the camaraderie and pride that is the essence of a club.”
Her fellow Ard Lú members were fulsome in their praise of Kerry Murphy, Club Secretary of the Year for 2024.
“Kerry does so much for her club and is always so helpful and approachable. She demonstrates the qualities of an outstanding club secretary, making a valuable impact on our club’s operations and member experience. She always has a smile on her face.”
Jane Whitaker at the AIRC NER awards night
Secretary of Copperfield, and a List 2 judge with Dressage Ireland, Jane Whitaker was voted the North East Region’s Person of the Year.
“Jane is an absolute asset to the NER. Currently holding the position of regional chair, she is also active as both a competitor and a dressage judge within our region.
“Jane gives endless unseen hours to the region – setting up dressage arenas and doing up times for various club shows to name a few. She is always on hand to answer queries and does so in a fair and practical manner. She is also full of innovative new ideas and is always thinking of ways to drive the NER forward, ensuring our members are catered for as much as possible. We really are very lucky to have her.”
