Michael Murphy (Grade I)
Horse: Cleverboy (17, Vivalfi x Kennedy)
Owner: Michael Murphy, Bronte Watson, Elder Klatzko, Sue Murphy and John Murphy
Form: The most experienced athlete on the side, Michael will be appearing at his second Paralympics in Paris having made his debut three years ago in Tokyo. Since then, with Cleverboy, he has won two bronze World Championship medals and, last year, added a silver medal at the FEI European Championships. This year so far, some of the scores from the pair have been below what they can normally produce, however Murphy, who also holds down a full-time job, will be hoping to add a Paralympic medal to the World and European ones that he has. Ireland’s best medal chance.
Kate Kerr Horan (Grade III)
Horse: Lykkebo’s Don Akino (9, Don Olymbrio x Michellino)
Owner: Ted Horan, Pam Kerr, Kate Kerr-Horan and Loui Porter
Form: The second Paralympian on the team, Kate also made her debut in Tokyo with Serafina T who she was initially selected on before the mare picked up a small injury. Instead, Kate will ride the nine-year-old mare Lykkebo’s Don Akino who joined her string of horses earlier this year.
The new combination got off to a good start wirh a number of impressive international performances this season, this partnership is described as really exciting for the future. Kate has plenty of experience and a wise head on her shoulders. An exciting pair to follow.
Jessica McKenna (Grade III)
Horse: Davidoff 188 (14, Volkhard Folkers x Rubinstein 46)
Owner: Emma McKenna, Dan McKenna, Anna McKenna, Elder Klatzko
Form: Jessica made her championship debut at the European Championships in Riesenbeck, Germany, last summer and finished in sixth place to make her mark on the sport with the talented gelding.
While it is a Paralympic debut for Jessica, Davidoff 188 finished seventh at the Tokyo Games with Denmark’s Caroline Ceceilie Nielsen, also in Grade III. With solid outings so far this year, this pair are capable of a big score and will hope to make that top eight in the Grand Prix for a spot in the Freestyle.
Sarah Slattery (Grade V)
Horse: Savona (17, San Amour x Expose 5)
Owner: Niels Bax, Helgstrand Dressage, Linda Slattery, Sofie Slattery
Form: Another Paralympic debutante, Sarah has been based at her sister Sophie’s show jumping yard in The Netherlands for the last few months preparing for Paris. Hailing from a show jumping family - her father is well-known Irish international rider Tom Slattery - she was a relatively late starter in dressage and para dressage, but this combination, who made their championship debut in Riesenbeck last year, are making strides all the time. Disappointed after that championship debut last year, Sarah will feel she can score higher and will have prepared well for this challenge.
