SLIGHTLY later than originally scheduled, the Irish Pony Club Raceday at The Curragh takes place tomorrow, Sunday, when the curtain comes down on the turf flat racing season in Ireland.

Ten IPC members will take part in an exhibition race following the Rockshore Maiden over a mile and a half, which is due to start at 4.10pm. The riders represent six Branches and four counties with five participants travelling up from Co Cork.

In alphabetical order, the riders are Jack Archdeacon (Duhallow) on Crowhill Cindy, Anna Boucher Hayes (Bray) on Brambles Bartholomew, Erin Dowling (Kildare) on Pinkie, Lulu Fitzsimons (Bray) on West Coast Prea, Khushi L’Hostis (United) on Gleann Mor Mollys Macalla, Emily Macken (Muskerry) on Royal Diamond, Emily Mulcahy (United) on Bramblebrough Angus, Katie Murphy (North Kilkenny) on Mr Mischief, Mia Perry (North Kilkenny) on Conna Nora Batty and Sasha Popova (Muskerry) on Jills A Gift.

The race was won last year by the Kildares’ Ellie Dillon on the Irish Sport Horse gelding OLS Inis Flaith while, on board Believe In Miracles, her twin sister Katie was judged the most stylish rider on the day. Katelyn Leddin, a member of the Co Limerick Branch, was announced as winner of the IPC training day held in the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE).

There is free entry for all to tomorrow’s meeting, which features two maidens, a conditions race, three handicaps, a Listed race and a Group 3 races. While IPC members attending will be delighted to see many of the country’s top flat jockeys in action, they will surely take a big interest in the race for the apprentice title. At time of writing on Thursday, former Ward Union Branch member James Ryan, who was also very active on the Irish Pony Society scene before moving into racing, topped the table on 33 wins, two ahead of Wayne Hassett and Adam Caffrey. There was a flat meeting in Dundalk last night.
