ENTRY level polo on the farm was what the tournament last weekend in Co Down was all about when Tyrella Polo Club hosted the first competition for beginners of all ages.

Drawn for the most part from local riding clubs, the children involved in this first tournament for the most part took up polo around one year ago, and many of their parents followed.

“It was really a family tournament,” said David Corbett of Tyrella Polo Club.

“It was the children who started playing and the parents got interested and now they are playing too.”

The winners of the youth section of the tournament were the Blue Badgers, followed by the Red Raccoons.

Entry level adults lining out on four teams had at least one seasoned player on their side throughout the tournament.

“This was what we call ‘farm polo’,” Corbett explained.

“You see it in New Zealand and Australia.

“This was the first opportunity for our new entrants to play competitive polo on a team and we had one senior player at least on each team and four teams.”

Entry level adults on Team Sixt won the tournament followed by Pizzado, Suitor Auto Fix and Cathedral.
