A VERY early start and an almost four-hour drive proved worthwhile for Irish Horse World journalist Bree Rutledge and Clovermount Rhinestone (aka Jewel), as they made the journey from the north all the way down to Stradbally Hall in Co Laois for the Endurance Ireland National Championships 2024 on Sunday.
The pair are ILDRA (Irish Long Distance Riding Association) members and normally participate in their Competitive Trail Rides; this was their first southern ride and their debut at the championships.
Organisers had to postpone from the original date of September 29th due to storms, but weather and ground conditions were perfect for the ride on Sunday. The stunning venue and super course provided such a treat for riders, with miles of open fields to enjoy, along with forest trails and only one road to cross.
Bree and Jewel rode the 40km novice distance close to the set time and passed the pre- and post-ride vettings with the lowest heart rate to win the Novice Championship. They just pipped runner-up Caroline Hamilton and Cookie by a few beats.
Well done to everyone who took part and to the organisers for putting on such a fantastic day.
