THE inaugural Global Champions Tour in New York last weekend attracted the who’s who of the New York social and sport scene.
Among those in the VIP at the show, which was held on Governors Island with an incredible background of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, were tennis ace Andre Agassi, supermodel Christy Turlington and fashion designer Donna Karan of DKNY fame.
A regular at shows to watch his daughter Georgina compete, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg also made the short trip to the show. The 172-acre Governors Island, which is just an eight-minute ferry trip from lower Manhattan, welcomed 140 horses for the very first time and it was, by all accounts, considered a huge success.
Jan Tops, LGCT president and founder, was delighted with the weekend, saying: “It is important for us to be in New York. America is an important horse nation and we have a strong footprint in the States. We found a good place for the horses and riders [on Governors Island]. We have started a fantastic tradition for years to come.”
