‘Pass Wide and Slow’ campaign
FOLLOWING on from the recent road safety awareness campaign launched by the Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority, with the backing of Horse Sport Ireland and Horse Racing Ireland, a new awareness campaign has been organised for September 19th. A nationwide ‘Pass Wide and Slow’ campaign will be held that day – 188 in total between Ireland and the UK.
The Three Counties Hacking Club in Portarlington is organising a ride which will originate in Portarlington’s Industrial Estate (gathering between 10:30-11am) and travel with a Garda escort to the Curragh Racecourse in Co Kildare. (See Facebook for more details).
The trip is a total of 26.5km, which is expected to take about 3.5 hours. Riders and carriage drivers are invited to support the ride for part or all of the route. On average two horses a week in the UK are killed in road traffic accidents.
A survey undertaken by Siobhan English and Anne O’Connor led to the Irish road safety campaign.
