IRELAND’S Philip McGuane took the top spot in last Friday’s three-star $62,500 WEF Challenge Round 6 with Orphea HQ, when they jumped double clear in a jump-off time of 37.38 seconds. They finished over a second ahead of runner-up Juan Pablo Gaspar Albanez (MEX) on Odiel VDM (38.41), while Bertram Allen on Qonquest De Rigo filled the podium in third (38.68).
Show jumping at week six of the Winter Equestrian Festival at Wellington International in Florida took place from February 12th to 16th.
Ireland’s Jonathan Corrigan on Flock placed ninth in Wednesday’s $6,000 1.40m Open Jumper class, while McGuane on My Lady van de Krekel came second in the $2,500 1.35m Open Jumper class, followed by Nicky Galligan on Iraya in seventh. James Brennan rode CSJ Sunny Side into eighth place in the day’s Six-year-old Young Jumper class.
Thursday saw a runner-up finish for Jenny Rankin on Ibiza in the three-star $1,000 1.40m class, followed by Kevin Gallagher on Ballerina-Hoem in ninth.
Allen on Gary de Cerisy won Thursday’s three-star $6,000 1.45m class, while Rankin rode Quatinka into sixth place. Andrew Bourns won the day’s $2,500 1.35m Open Jumper class riding MCS Leisester, while in the $6,000 1.40m Open Jumper class, McGuane was runner-up with My Lady van de Krekel and Stephen Moore placed fourth with Conny Blue BH.
Senan Hayes was sixth in the Six-year-old Young Jumper class on Tito and seventh in the Seven-year-old version on Spiderman.
In Friday’s $2,000 1.30m Open Jumper class, Kevin Mealiff on Jolly Joker placed fourth, with Corrigan on Pastina in seventh. In the day’s Six-year-old class, Hayes on Tito took the win, with Darragh Kerins on Lisonas Gold in seventh. Meanwhile, Max Foley on IT Girl came fourth in the $6,000 1.40m Open Jumper class.
Saturday saw three Irish in the top five of the $5,000 Under 25 Welcome class, with Niamh McEvoy on BP Swifty in third, Francis Derwin on Mendoza VDL in fourth and Tim Brennan on Diadema Della Caccia in fifth. Daniel Kerins on Malou Blue PS finished seventh.
The three-star $32,000 1.50m Classic saw a second place finish for McGuane on Edgard de Prefontaine, with fourth place going to Christian Coyle on Chicago CM and fifth to Allen on Gary de Cerisy. Rankin rode Quatinka into 10th place.
Sunday’s $31.020 Under 25 Grand Prix saw Derwin finish fifth with Mendoza VDL from a start list of 59, while the three-star $140,000 Grand Prix saw Max Wachman on Lexington finish fifth, followed by Coyle on Extravaganza Semilly in seventh and Paul O’Shea on Imerald Van’T Voorhof in ninth.
