ON the racing front, there were a few equestrian-related winners recently.
On Friday last at Musselburgh, the three-mile handicap hurdle was won by the Fergal O’Brien-trained Mahler Moon, who got off the mark on his 16th attempt. The seven-year-old Mahler gelding was bred out of the unraced Presenting mare Celestial Spirit by Gerry Leahy who, on Saturday, was at Tyrella to see his 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Millridge Atlantis finish fourth in the EI115 under Ian Cassells.
Gerry was just one of the many members of the ICE (Ian Cassells Eventing) supporters’ club in attendance, the majority of whom are due to be at Thoresby Park this weekend, where there is a large Irish entry.
Winners of interest
There were two winners of interest on Sunday. First up, the Gemma Phelan-bred Siege Ofjadotville landed the two-mile opportunity handicap hurdle on his fourth start (all over hurdles) giving Ross Berry his first win as a professional jockey. Trained by Martin Hassett, the five-year-old Soldier Of Fortune gelding is the second foal, and only runner to date, out of the unraced, well-related King’s Theatre mare Letitbetrue.
Shortly afterwards, but at the Tipperary point-to-point in Lisronagh, the older geldings’ maiden was won by the French-bred newcomer Rosier The.
The six-year-old, who is by the now Whytemount Stud-based Monsun stallion Manatee, is trained by multiple hat-wearing Louise Lyons for her partner Nicky Teehan, who purchased the winner as a foal in France.
Rosier The was led up by Ryan Treacy and welcomed back to the No 1 spot by Louise, Nicky and their three children Nancy (11), Robin (nine) and Nicky George (eight).
