TIPPERARY international show jumper Greg Broderick proved a big hit with young riders of all ages, presenting A.I.R.E. certificates to over 70 at Clarina Equestrian Centre in Co Limerick.

The centre, which is run by Mary McCarthy and her daughter Gillian, played host to a fantastic evening of fun and entertainment which even saw the Rio Olympian take part in a pony challenge to the delight of the youngsters who turned out in droves last Friday.

The McCarthys, who own the talented show jumper Cavalier Rusticana, campaigned with success by Peter Smyth, met Broderick at Liverpool International Horse Show where he kindly agreed to a future visit at their Co Limerick centre.

Clarina EC, which was established in 1979, hosted an evening with Greg and the Rio Olympian had plenty of advice for the budding young riders, outlining how hard you need to work to succeed in what is a tough but rewarding business.

“Greg was amazing and so good with all the children. He told the children that riding schools give a good grounding and that it was important that they enjoy riding the ponies and doing their best as you never know where that might take you. He encouraged them to learn all they can at Clarina and to work hard to prove themselves.

“The highlight of the night was Greg taking part in the pony games, musical numnahs in particular with Gillian.

“It proved more of a challenge than he might have thought it would, he was a very good sport. Greg also presented 70 AIRE certs to the children and signed autographs for them all,” said Mary, whom many people will know from her days with the legendary Iris Kellett.
