ALWAYS one of the feature national classes at the Cavan International November horse show, Sunday’s four-year-old final, sponsored by Strathroy Milk, attracted plenty of spectators to watch the young stars of the sport give an exhibition.

All the clear rounds from the qualifiers made it through to Saturday’s preliminary final, where the top 20 went on to contest the final over two rounds.

Judged by John Floody, Alexander Butler and Eamon Rice, the top spot eventually went to Marion Hughes’ Irish-bred mare HHS Los Angeles, ridden by Dominic Curley. Bred at Hughes’ Kilkenny stud, the mare is by Le Roi out of the Cavalier Royale-sired China Cavalier.

POTENTIAL

Four-year-old champion in Dublin last August under Shane Goggins, JDP Dougland took the runner-up spot under his new owner Lauren Haire. The Ard VDL Douglas-gelding was bred by Joe Prendergast and looks to have plenty of potential for the future.

Cathal McMunn and Jonathan Reape’s Dutch-bred mare Jardy by Arezzo VDL took third place in the final line-up, ahead of Damien Griffin and Mr Lincoln B. Winner of the 2017 Irish Farmers Journal Young Irelander final, this was just the stallion’s second show under saddle. He is by Aganix du Seigneur out of an O-Piloth mare and is owned and bred by Andrea Etter’s Belmont Stud.

Annemarie Darcy’s Boheardeal Clover gelding Castle Lux Clover slotted into fifth place under Sean Kavangh, while the winner of Saturday’s preliminary final, Major Royale ridden by Angela Percy, finished in sixth place. Owned by Denise O’Sullivan, the OBOS Quality 004 gelding was bred by Paul Seymour.
