CAPTAIN Geoff Curran recorded a fantastic weekend for the Army Equitation School and Irish-bred horses when scoring five wins on four different mounts at the two-star show in Carmona, Spain.

The first win came on Thursday when Curran guided the Minister for Defence’s 15-year-old gelding Drumiller Lough (Heartbreaker x Moutain Pearl), who was bred by Paul Dillon, to victory in the 1.35m two-phase class with the best time in 20.43 seconds.

Curran’s second win came in Friday’s 1.45m when the Traditional Irish Sport Horse stallion Hallowberry Cruz produced the fastest round of the class to come out on top and win €6,250.

The Cruising-sired 12-year-old was bred by Caroline Byrne in Co Wicklow and is currently leased to the Army Equitation School.

The next victory was aboard Rathbourne (by Je t’Aime Flamenco) in Saturday’s 1.30m jump-off class. Just five combinations made it through the jump-off, including three Irish, and Curran broke the beam in 41.88 seconds to take the honours with the eight-year-old mare who was bred in Kilkenny by Tom Moloney.

Sofie Slattery slotted into second place with the 10-year-old Irish mare Uidam (Luidam x Cavalier Royale), and Madeline Gervais was fourth aboard Estrekka de la Pomme.

Later that day, Curran was back at the head of the victory lap with the eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse Glengarra Wood (Capitalist x Cavalier Clover Lad) in the 1.40m Table A. That combination also won Sunday’s 1.40m jump-off class with a clear round against the clock in a time of 47.20 seconds.

Thirty-two combinations started in Sunday’s 1.45m Grand Prix and Curran was one of five to make it through to the jump-off where he faulted once with Hallowberry Cruz to finish in fourth place, earning €2,500.

Sofie Slattery finished the first round with four faults aboard Valentine du Bois Pinchet to slot into seventh place. Victory went to Slovakia’s Radovan Sillo with Durant T.

Slattery picked up a win of her own with Uidam (ISH) in Friday’s two-star 1.20m with a speedy clear round in 30.58.

Not to be outdone, her father, Tom Slattery, guided Larca van Erpecom to victory in Thursday’s one-star seven-year-old 1.35m.
