NINETEEN-year-old Jason Foley finished out the Spanish Sunshine Tour in Vejer de la Frontera with four wins on the final week.
His biggest win came in Saturday’s 1.45m jump-off class aboard Martin Egan and Ger O’Neill’s 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Castlefield Vegas (Cassino x Lux Z), bred by John Clarke. The pair were among a jump-off of 24 riders from a startlist of 90.
Foley’s time of 31.94 seconds against the clock was quicker than 18 other double clear rounds to earn €6,350. Poland’s Andrzej Oplatek finished second aboard Stakkatan, breaking the beam in 32.31 seconds, while Ireland’s Mikey Pender (HHS Calais ISH) and Jonathan Gordon (Sunny) slotted into fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Foley also won the 1.30m Table A on the same day on the venue. Riding the Jim O’Neill-bred Castlefield Sapphire (Dondoctro Ryal K x Heritage Fortunus), he was the best of 21 clear rounds in the class.
A good day was rounded off for Foley with a runner-up place in the 1.40m Accumulator on another Jim O’Neill-bred horse, the 10-year-old Cassidee-sired Castlefield Cass. They finished with the top score of 65 in a time of 46.83, just behind Canada’s Kara Chad and Firefly W (65/46.22).
Mikey Pender was third in Thursday’s 1.50m Table A class at the Spanish venue. He rode the Irish Sport Horse gelding HHS Calais (Cavalier Royale x OBOS Quality), bred by the late Ita Brennan, to a clear round in 64.46.
Jennifer Kuehnle, winner of a 1.45m Grand Prix just three weeks ago, placed third in Saturday’s three-star 1.45m Table A riding Arlo de Blondel.
Kuehnle, who rides for Richard Howley’s HK Horses, guided the 10-year-old to a clear jumping round but picked up a single time fault to collect €3,810.
