OFFALY’S Darragh Kenny stormed to victory in the two-star speed class at the Rome Global Champions Tour in Italy on Sunday, before heavy rain and thunder storms forced the show to be cancelled.

Kenny partnered the eight-year-old mare Chanel to the fastest clear round, in 65.16 seconds, to finish with a winning margin of over two seconds and collect just over €8,000.

The five-star Global Champions Tour, which normally runs on Saturday evenings, was postponed to Sunday due to the heavy rain.

Irish riders Bertram Allen (Hector van d’Abdijhoeve) and Denis Lynch (All Star 5), didn’t feature in the

prizes in the class, with both riders

picking up four faults in each of the two rounds.

Allen, however, did add to his league points tally when finishing in 13th place and now lies fourth overall in the Global Tour standings with just two rounds remaining at Vienna and Doha.

A total of six riders jumped three clear rounds in the 1.60m feature class. The fastest of those was the Netherlands’ Harrie Smolders and Don VHP Z in 33.11 seconds, ahead of France’s Simon Delestre with Chesall Zimequest (0/0/0 34.00) and Dutchman Maikel van der Vleuten aboard VDL Groep Arera C (0/0/0 34.07). Sweden’s Rolf-Göran Bengtsson moved to the top of the leaderboard on 272 points, with just five points to spare over Australian Edwina Tops-Alexander.
