VINCENT Byrne and Flaminia Straumann’s German-bred stallion Quantino won Saturday’s feature, the Gain/Alltech National Grand Prix in the Coolmore arena at Tattersalls.

By Quartz out of Zagora T, by Coriano, he has been consistently well-placed in the National Grand Prix league, taking sixth recently in Balmoral, a superb win in CoilÓg in June, as well as a sixth place in Hollypark in May.

Sponsored by Sam Dennigan and Co to the tune of €5,000, the class attracted a start list of 33 combinations.

Seventeen managed to produce a first-round clear to earn a spot in the jump-off against the clock.

Byrne proved best of these, stopping the clock at 39.96 aboard Quantino for the win.

European silver medallist, Francis Derwin Jnr, came closest to catching him, when he rode his father’s mare Parvati AEG (Arezzo VDL x Darco) through the finish beams in 40.16 for the runner-up spot.

The Army Equitation School was well-represented, with Lt Michaeli Byrne riding the eight-year-old Glendarragh (Future Trend x Aldatus Z) into third place in a time of 41.86, while Comdt Geoff Curran captured fourth in 42.60 aboard Derrycush (Emerald Van’t Ruytershof x Aldato), bred by Alfie Hillen.

Orla Queally and her family’s Dutch-bred gelding Gentleman-Time (Quality Time x Cento) slotted into fifth in 43.28.

Northstar Sport Horses’ eight-year-old Pablo C (Pollux De Muze Z x Pacino), bred by Jordan Campbell, was ridden into sixth place by Niamh McEvoy.

The next round of the National Grand Prix league takes place tomorrow, August 4th, in Killossery Lodge.
