JOHN Floody completed an impressive double when winning both feature events at Cavan Equestrian Centre last weekend.
Partnering Donevan Erkindale on Saturday and Accidental Diamond on Sunday, the Meath-based rider finished in the top spot in both 1.35m Grand Prix classes securing the lion’s share of the €2,000 prize fund on offer in each.
A strong field of 88 combinations lined out for Saturday evening’s two-phase class. Just a dozen managed to keep a clean sheet over both rounds.
Young rider Ellen Kenny (Champion U) and Sara-Jane Tracy (My Lord Z) both just exceeded the time allowed to collect a single time-fault apiece, while Cavan resident jockey Victoria Clarke (Chinatown) was the fastest four-faulter in what would have been the fastest time of the day in 31.89.
Partnering Kevin and Geralyn Thompson’s 13-year-old Dutch-bred gelding Donevan Erkindale (Unaniem x Faust Z), Floody stopped the clock at 32.93 seconds to secure the victory.
Cavan has proved a happy hunting ground for the pair of late; they won the 1.35m Grand Prix on the final day of the Cavan Indoor Championships in September, and finished as runners-up in the equivalent class two days earlier at the venue.
The Helen O’Regan and John Hoyne-owned nine-year-old gelding City finished as runner-up on this occasion breaking the finish beams at 33.24. Maura Counihan Jnr and her own mare Killerisk Minnie (Corghano x Vasco) took third place in 33.95.
Fourth place went to Jonathan Smyth riding Dominic Rice’s eight-year-old Premier Spirit (Premier Sport x Hermes de Reve). Angela Waras and Gillian Kerr’s Marblearch (Lougherne Cappuccino x Dancing Boy) were fifth, while sixth was Lucy Shanahan and David Dodd’s My Diamant Pd Z (Mylord Carthago x Diamant de Semilly).
Sunday afternoon’s class attracted a slightly smaller field of 51. Of these, just 10 left all the fences intact over both the first and second phases.
Floody once again proved fastest of these, but this time was partnered by Kathryn Magennis’ nine-year-old Irish-bred gelding Accidental Diamond (Diamond Roller x High Roller), they stopped the clock in a very fast 26.15 to snatch the top spot.
Victoria Clarke came closest to catching him, crossing the finish line in 26.95 for second place aboard the German-bred 11-year-old gelding Chinatown.
Junior rider Niamh McEvoy and her father Richard’s Dutch-bred mare Haifi OL finished in third place having recorded a second phase time of 27.42.
Edward Doyle, riding Lisa Cawley’s Flexability (Flex A Bill x Diamond Lad), slotted into fourth, while Brendan Murphy and City once again featured taking fifth place on this occasion.
Sean Kavanagh and Aoibhin Phelan’s seven-year-old gelding Castle Lux Clover (Boherdeal Clover x Lux Z) completed the top-six.
