FIRST into the arena on Sunday morning in the Young Rider qualifiers in Cavan Equestrian was the 1.35-140m hopefuls, with 42 going to post. In what was a technical course, just three double clears were delivered in what ended up as a six-way jump-off.

Taking the first ticket was Leinster rider Timmy Brennan and Diadema Della Caccia, when they were the fastest of the double clears in 38.68. Christian Kennedy and Lagans Obos Quality came closest to catching the winner, crossing the line in a time of 42.33, while Kilkenny’s Emily Moloney and Temple Alice kept all the poles in place in a time of 42.34.

Cian McMunn lodged a fast round of 38.81 with Oberon Van ‘T Lohof, but four faults saw them slot into fourth place. Stephen Gibbons had two on the ground with Cassius Z in a time of 38.95 for fifth place, while in sixth was Conor McLaughlin and Kilbarron Rue, with eight faults in a time of 40.99.

1.25-1.30m

The 1.25-1.30m section saw one of the larger entries, with 111 batting it out for the five places on offer in this round. In total, 12 progressed to the final third round and half of those maintained clean sheets. Clinching victory was Ruby Lily Gaines aboard Castle Lux Clover, when they stopped the clock in a time of 33.30 seconds.

Cornelius Brennan and Escarda U, followed closely behind in 34.68 for second, ahead of Rebecca Smyth and Creevagh Imp II, who galloped home in a time of 34.97. Fourth place belonged to Alice Moloney and Castlefield Cass, when they were less than a second behind in 35.48.

Kate McGovern and Shs Sybel accounted for fifth place, when they crossed the line in 36.67, while in sixth place was Sadhbh Cuffe and the seven-year-old Dunard Chill Out Lui, in a time of 37.17.

1.10-1.15m

Winner of the 1.10m class was Siobhan Doyle, when she lodged a triple clear with the seven-year-old Dante Dv Z, in a time of 35.72. She was chased home by Edward Feeney and his seven-year-old Miss Jones, crossing the line with nothing to add in 37.08.

Laura Hales and Killycloghan Knight Time (seven-year-old) answered all the questions, albeit in the slower time of 37.40 for third. A triple clear for Maisie Adams and the five-year-old Tresor v’t Dauwhof in a time of 40.30 saw her take fourth, ahead of Emily Moloney, who was riding the six-year-old Star van de Heffinck. Completing the top six was Cara McFadden and Orville Jack (six-year-old), when they finished fastest of the four-faulters in a time of 38.87.

Children on Horses

It was a good outing for the Widger family, with Sam Widger and Jerenice Dysenbeeck Z leading the victory lap in the Children on Horses section after delivering a triple clear in a time of 32.13. Henry Sinnott and the eight-year-old Ridge Douglas Lady also maintained a clean sheet in a time of 32.91 for second. Ciara Cash and Carnaval Cocktail accounted for third place, when they maintained a clean sheet over three rounds in a time of 33.62. Little separated the next placing as Matilde Hughes Bravo and Miss Belgium crossed the line clear, in 33.80. A clear from Juliana Duffy and Castlefield Blue in a time of 34.53 saw her take fifth, ahead of Daisy O’Dea and the seven-year-old, CSF Zurich, clear in 36.29.
