JOHN McEntee captured his second victory of the day, when he won the six and seven-year-old Championship Handicap at Portmore’s Autumn Championships on Sunday, which was sponsored by Lee Johnston Farrier.
The two-phase 1.25m class attracted 54 starters and 17 of these produced a double clear round, so time became an important factor.
McEntee had the advantage of being second last to go aboard Linda Courtney’s seven-year-old LCC Monte Karlo.
By Casallco out of Ark of Diamonds, by VDL Arkansas, the gelding was bred by Linda and was formerly ridden by her daughter, Annie.
Commenting on the win, McEntee said: “I felt he jumped really well. I was near the end of the class, so I knew it was very quick. I just went in and gave it a go and he was very good.
“He’s really careful and naturally quick, you can trust him. He did it quite easy I thought.
"The plan for him now is to do the November show in Cavan and then have a bit of a break.”
McEntee’s second round time of 22.72 was just ahead of runner-up Megan McGettigan with Regula Wassmer’s six-year-old Belmondo (KEC Maximum Joe x Voltaire), bred by Enda Corry. They crossed the finish line in 22.75.
Sean Foley rode Dermott Lennon’s home-bred seven-year-old gelding Beach Pleasure (Beach Ball x Aganix du Seigneur) into third in 23.72.
Fourth went to Olivia Roulston and Vincent Burton’s six-year-old home-bred Drumrankin Dignity (Dignified Van’t Zorgvliet x Loughahoe Guy) in 23.73.
Jodie Creighton and the Michelle McElhatton-owned and bred Cazadee (Cazaan x Ramiro B) were fifth in 23.91.
Lucy Gibson and her family’s home-bred Lady Catoki (Catoki x Ars Vivendi) took sixth place in the final.
Ward win
Dylan Ward and his father Hugh’s home-bred gelding Diamant De La Mer (Diamant De Semilly x Eurocommerce Berlin) won the 1.20m Championship two-phase class at the Portmore Autumn Championships on Sunday.
The duo posted a second-round time of 22.02, just ahead of second placed Ava Stubbs riding Lyndsay Barnett’s Tullyhill Lucy Diamond in 22.67.
Hannah Patterson and her own Dutch-bred Daberlina M (Zento x Concorde) took third in 23.16.
Fourth went to Kathryn O’Hagan with her own Waltham Abbey (Harlequin du Carel x Cruising), they broke the finish beams in 23.24.
Ken Bolton’s Simple Vision (Mermus R x Classic Vision), bred by McLoughlin Bros, was ridden to fifth place by Emma Jackson, while Kathryn O’Hagan’s CHS Fortitude (Heritage Fortunus x Cavalier Royale) and John Hagen took sixth.
