Twomey third
AT Hagen’s four-star show in Germany, Cork’s Billy Twomey and the Terry Payne-owned gelding Diaghilev took third place on the podium in last Saturday’s feature 1.50m jump-off class.
Twomey and Diaghilev were one of a massive 27 combinations who jumped clear in the opening round to set up a hugely competitive jump-off against the clock.
Another clear round against the clock for Twomey in a time of 29.94 saw him finish third behind Italian winner Emanuele Gaudiano riding Carlotta (0/0 28.69).
Duffy placed
MAYO’s Michael G Duffy placed 10th in the seven-year-old final in Maubeuge, France, last Sunday. Riding Carl Hanley Sporthorses’s home-bred Irish Sport Horse gelding, Captain Maddox (Captain Clover x Argentinius), Duffy just picked up four faults in the jump-off to finish 10th.
Moloney third
WATERFORD’s Peter Moloney finished third in last Saturday’s two-star 1.35m in Chepstow, Britain. Riding Elvis van de Vrunte, Moloney jumped a double clear round in 35.11 seconds to take third place. Tipperary-born Shane Breen finished ninth with the Irish Sport Horse CSF Vendi Cruz (Ars Vivendi x Cruising), with four faults in the second round.
Breen guided the Brian Cassidy-owned nine-year-old to third place in Sunday’s 1.35m accumulator. They picked up the maximum 65 points in a time of 51.67 seconds. Breen rounded off a good weekend with a fourth place finish in the 1.35m aboard Acoustik Solo du Baloubet, clear in 51.45.
Quantum Cruise wins GP
THE eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse ABC Quantum Cruise won the two-star Grand Prix at Chepstow last Sunday, under Britain’s Peter Charles. By OBOS Quality, ABC Quantum Cruise was bred in Co Carlow by Patrick Kehoe and is out of the mare Ardnehue Diamond Cruiser (by Cruising), who herself won the five-year-old Cavan Classic. Charles guided the gelding to the fastest double clear in 40.47 seconds to pick up €7,500.
McAuley second
LOUTH’s Mark McAuley took the runner-up position in last Saturday’s 1.40m at the two-star show in Busto Arsizio in Italy. Riding Jasco VD Bisschop, McAuley produced a double clear round in 46.10 seconds to collect €1,000, behind Italian winner Roberto Turchetto and Enasco Fortuna (0/0 44.46).
At the same venue, Swiss-based Thomas Ryan won the one-star seven-year-old class with Larimosa, jumping clear in 33.09 seconds.
Z Wellie 72
THE Irish-produced KWPN stallion Z Wellie 72 came out on top in the two-star Longines FEI World Cup in Beijing. Ridden by Rima Da of China, the 13-year-old stallion was one of seven clear rounds in the 1.50m class, and went on to jump a second clear against the clock in 44.89 seconds. Bought by Ger O’Brien as a three-year-old, Z Wellie 72 was produced through the ranks in Ireland by Ger O’Neill and they won the six/seven-year-old final at the Nations Championships in 2011. He was sold to China later that year through producer and agent Carol Gee.
