A CORNER of Co Kilkenny will be enveloped in a wave of nostalgia next Sunday, July 9th, when Inistioge Show opens its gates for the first time in 34 years.
The Inistioge Agricultural Show, as it was then known, was launched in 1963 and was considered one of the most important show jumping fixtures of its age. Situated on the scenic banks of the River Nore, the show played host to some of the legends in the sport. Dream team members Eddie Macken, Capt. Con Power, Paul Darragh and Capt. Gerry Mullins all jumped here with their best horses, as did James Kiernan, Robert Splaine and Jack Doyle.
Many other successful events were organised by the Society, and it was a sad day when the last three-day Agricultural Show closed in June 1983.
While these golden memories remain, the organising committee has skipped a generation to reform, and have aimed to stage a generously sponsored jumping show for all abilities. Once again, the River Nore will provide the backdrop, while the big event of the day will be the main show jumping class (1.10m) class which carries a prize fund of €800 with €400 to the winner.
A further 25 classes will be staged in three arenas, among which are Newcomers, the Glencarrig Lady League, the National Pony League qualifier and the Leinster League for ponies and horses.
