NEWS of the passing of equestrian stalwart Roberta Malcolmson (88) last Sunday has been greeted with widespread sadness. The Clonmel native was one of the longest serving regional secretaries within the Show Jumping Association (SJI).

During her life, Roberta Malcolmson worked tirelessly in her capacity as SJI Munster regional secretary and as secretary of the Waterford/Tipperary branch.

She also served as a SJI judge, show secretary, course designer and field steward. In 1947, she was elected as Hononary Secretary of the Waterford/Tipperary Branch and in 1972 she became secretary of the Munster region.

At 18, Roberta was introduced to course designing, a role which fulfilled for many years.

Her interest did not only lay in the administration side of the industry as she was a keen competitor herself.

Roberta shot to fame in the 1940s with her horse Obby in the adult showjumping classes.

Her other horse, Carol, enabled her to win in the RDS and a horse that she rode for Audrey Bury from Co Waterford, called Serpentine, also helped her to collect numerous prizes in the ring.

Roberta did not limit herself to show jumping and she also lent her hand to many showing classes. She showed a horse for mother called Tilly Losch, which the family bred, and went on to win in the RDS on two occasions.

With only a small honorarium as payment for her delegated responsibilities, it was clear, that it was Roberta’s passion for the sport was what drove her.

For decades Roberta Malcolmson served the industry which she loved and her dedication was absolutely second to none.
