A VERY young Christopher Ryan took over the family pack as master and huntsman just 38 seasons ago, back in 1986. Since that auspicious appointment, Chris and the hounds have shown tremendous sport over the challenging Scarteen bank country.

A modern huntsman and master needs to be the complete package - a horseman, a houndman and, above all, a diplomat to keep a hunt running in parallel with modern farming. Chris ticks all those boxes and more and has dedicated his life talents to his beloved hunt. While he no longer carries the horn, his interest and dedication is as strong as it was on his first day’s hunting.

In recognition of his hard work and dedication, the Scarteen Hunt committee, with support from friends, decided to commission a hunting portrait from sporting artist Liam Clancy, which was presented to Chris in front of Scarteen House before hunting in Knocklong. Hughie Ryan and hounds formed the ideal backdrop.

Hunt Chairman John Hourigan, on behalf of the committee, with a few well-chosen words, made the presentation. There to receive it was Chris and his family, wife Sue and children, Tadhg and Emma.

I’m sure that all Chris’ friends from the world of hunting and eventing would like to wish him a speedy and full recovery from his present health issues.
