WORLD champion Orange de Baugy is expected to be the star of the show in the third annual Ballypatrick Auction on December 28th. The brainchild of Greg Broderick at Ballypatrick Stables in Thurles, Co Tipperary, the online auction has had huge success and that looks to continue next week, when 25 lots go under the hammer.
Orange de Baugy was breathtaking to watch when crowned the five-year-old world champion at the WBFSH World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Lanaken from over 250 starters this year, ridden by Niamh McEvoy. The Dominator Z mare is offered as Lot 1 and has a starting bid amount of €50,000.
“The world champion is going to be the limelight,” said Greg Broderick. “We only bought her in August from the Bolands in Wexford. Our first show with her was Lanaken when she won. She is not the biggest mare in the world to look at, so sometimes you question the scope when you see a horse that’s not overly big, but when you see how easy she can jump big jumps and how light she is, she is an absolute machine. I think that she has a very solid chance of being a really top horse in future.”
Another standout is Lot 8, the beautiful five-year-old gelding Jasmin D’Ariel, by Panana Tame and from a damline that includes 1.60m stars Muscaris D’Ariel and Prunella D’Ariel. “He is a lovely horse with a very nice mentality. He is definitely going to be a Grand Prix horse,” Broderick commented.
Another of the five-year-olds to catch the eye is Janus De Vains, a gelding by Emerald Van’t Ruytershof out of the 1.60m jumper Destinee De Vains who is competing at five-star level with Ireland’s Mark McAuley. “He has huge scope; there’s no doubt watching that horse that there would be no Grand Prix he can’t jump,” Broderick said of the bay, adding: “He’s a proper Grand Prix horse for down the road.”
Three-year-olds
There are a number of standouts among the 11 three-year-olds offered. Among them are three by Ballypatrick’s resident stallion Rock n’ Roll Ter Putte. The first is Lot 19, the brown filly BP Rock Queen, who boasts an impressive damline pedigree – she is out of the Cardento mare MHS Kylemore, who is a full sibling to the Tokyo Olympic horse Kilkenny.
Another by Rock N’ Roll is the bay gelding BP Rock DJ (Lot 22), who is out of the Balou du Rouet mare Doctros Balou, a full-sister to 1.55m performer Thomascourt Ballypatrick, as well as the home-bred offering of BP Pineapple (Lot 25), a filly out of the 1.45m mare Pineapple Swirl.
“All three are out of good damlines and they’re three nice horses with good balance and, if brought along correctly, are going to jump at a good level.”
Among two fabulous ponies offered is the flashy chesnut 148cm six-year-old mare BP Ooh La La (Lot 6), who is by Fantomas de Muze out of a Kannan dam, and the Irish-bred Monbeg Amber (Lot 7), a seven-year-old grey mare by Luidam out of the 1.50m mare Ballycapple Mist (Boherdeal Clover).
Reflecting on the hard work that has gone into the auction, promoting the horses worldwide with professional videos, Broderick added: “The horses we’ve sold in the past two auctions have done us overall very proud and we’ve met new people and there’s been many positives, so it’s been great.”
