Duffy (78), from Knocknacarra in Galway was the founder of Duffy’s Equestrian Centre in Loughgeorge, Co Galway and is survived by his wife Brid, sons Paul, Brendan and Mark and daughter Audrey.
Tony Hurley, chairman of Showjumping Ireland, extended the deepest sympathy to all Paul Duffy Snr's family and friends on the news of his passing, saying he had been a driving force in show jumping and instrumental in the development of the sport in Ireland.
“A renowned course designer throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Paul was awarded international course designer status in 1980 and over the following years, he proved his ability by successfully designing and leaving his trademark on fair and innovative courses across four continents,” said Hurley. His course deigning career include the 1982 World Championships and the Sydney Royal Show.
“He was also the driving force behind the Irish Show Jumping Championships, which began in Salthill in 1985. The show was a huge success and received extensive television coverage. It became the most prestigious show jumping event in Ireland and continued until the mid 1990s,” he continued.
Duffy was a member of the board of Showjumping Ireland and was chairman of the national competitions committee.
He held the post of chairman of international affairs for over 10 years and also served as a chef d’equipe for the Irish team.
“He will remembered for his extensive contribution to the sport and his legacy will live on in show jumping,” said Hurley.
