BALLYLINCH STUD SPECIAL 22 December 2021 Free

THE arrival in the post this week of the Ballylinch Stud brochure for the 2022 season was not just a promotional vehicle for the stud’s seven stallions. Four of them, Lope De Vega (Shamardal), Make Believe (Makfi), New Bay (Dubawi) and Waldgeist (Galileo), are at Ballylinch, Dream Ahead (Diktat) is at Bearstone Stud, Lawman (Invincible Spirit) stands at Haras de Grandchamp, while Fascinating Rock (Fastnet Rock) has moved to Burgage Stud.

To the delight of this columnist, and many others no doubt, the latter pages of the brochure list all the Ballylinch mares. Details of the 66 mares are reproduced over these two pages, as many breeders in Ireland will have relations of this top-quality broodmare band. The mares reside at Ballylinch and at their sister farm near Kilcullen, Castlemartin Stud.

Ballylinch Stud has bred 10 individual Group or Grade 1 winners, including Red Rocks (Galileo), Chriselliam (Iffraaj) and Aunt Pearl (Lope De Vega), all of whom won at the Breeders’ Cup. They also bred the champion juvenile and leading young sire Belardo (Lope De Vega), as well as being responsible for his best winner to date, Group 2 Rockfel Stakes heroine Isabella Giles.

Look forward

The stud has much to look forward to in 2022 on the racecourse as this year’s juvenile winners bred at the Co Kilkenny nursery include Bayside Boy (New Bay) who won the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and placed in both the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and Futurity Trophy, while Fast Attack (Kodiac) landed the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes.
