NEXT Friday’s sale of point-to-pointers at Cheltenham will be (we hope!) the final on-site throughbred sale of the year in Ireland and Britain.
Taking place after racing, this sale has produced 10 Grade 1 winners in its relatively short lifespan. Its most recent top-level winner is Farren Glory, victorious in last Sunday’s Grade 1 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle on his third start over hurdles. The six-year-old was bought just 12 months ago for £60,000 by Mouse O’Ryan and Gordon Elliott after finishing second in a maiden point-to-point at Turtulla for handler Matt Collins.
Hermes Allen, a 2021 graduate of this sale (£350,000) and already a Grade 1-winning hurdler, took the step up to chasing in his stride when successful on his fencing debut in Newbury’s Grade 2 John Francome Novices’ Chase last week, while his stablemate Stay Away Fay (£305,000 in 2021 and winner of the 2023 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle), also won on his chasing debut and was due to run in yesterday’s Grade 2 Esher Novices’ Chase at Sandown. Also declared for that Sandown race was the Lucinda Russell-trained Giovinco, bought for £85,000 at this sale in 2022 and winner of four of his first five starts for connections.
The 31 initial entries for next Friday includes 23-winning and placed four-year-old point-to-pointers, six five-year-old point-to-point winners, and two-winning and placed bumper horses.
Matthew Flynn O’Connor’s Ballycrystal Stables, consignor of Stay Away Fay, offers the winners of both divisions of the four-year-old maiden held at last weekend’s Lingstown meeting – Going Live (Doyen) and Tumuch (Buck’s Boum), who won his race by 12 lengths and was given a favourable write-up by point-to-point expert Eogháin Ward (see page 49).
While Farren Glory was winning at Fairyhouse last Sunday, his stable companion Machismo won a point-to-point at Borris House and looks a potential star.
Another very interesting lot is the Ray Cody-trained Ma Shantou, who was a 33/1 shot when he finished third to horses trained by Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott in a Fairyhouse bumper last Sunday.
Wildcard entries will be open until after this weekend’s Irish point-to-points at Kirkistown, Boulta and Tattersalls, and the British meeting at Larkhill where the maiden is now open to four-year-olds.
