HOPE you enjoyed the rest – it’s sales time again!

The domestic sales year starts on Tuesday (January 30th) with the one-day Tattersalls Ireland February National Hunt Sale. There are 194 lots catalogued and all bar five are newly-turned yearlings.

There are 17 by Blue Bresil, 13 by Crystal Ocean, 11 by Poet’s Word and five by Walk In The Park.

The five mares on offer are headed by the eight-year-old Monishter Are Mwee, a winner over hurdles and fences. Rachel O’Neill has put in a late entry for a Walk In The Park four-year-old filly, who will be the last lot into the ring.

Lot 7: Blue Bresil yearling colt out of Vickeeto

A lovely yearling. He is a June 8th foal so that is why we aimed him at this sale. He has plenty of size and is a good walker. He’s a half-brother to a Grade 1 winner in Feronily and is by the right sire too!

Lot 74: Eagles By Day yearling colt out of Glory Queen

A big, strong foal. He is a half-brother to a blacktype filly in England.

Lot 113: Blue Bresil yearling colt out of Maryota

He is a grand, good-walking yearling and has good size. He is a late April foal, that’s why we aimed for February. He is a half-brother to Mr Glass, who Paul Nicholls trained, and there are plenty of other winners in the pedigree and there are a few more to run. The dam is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Yanworth and she has bred five winners.

Lot 117: Kara Melody, yearling colt by Karaktar out of Miss Coquin

Karatar is the talking sire at the moment following the performance of his son Il Est Francais at Kempton at Christmas. This is a nice yearling and the dam is a winning half-sister to three blacktype horses.

Lot 133: Way To Paris yearling colt out of On The Way Home

He is a nice yearling. The dam is an own-sister to Rockonthemoor and a half-sister to Get Me Out Of Here.

Lot 187: Nakiro Chiron, yearling colt by Buck’s Boum out of Sun Queen

This is a nice Buck’s Boum yearling out of a two-time winning French mare who has bred two winners herself.

Who are the other members of the team helping you at this sale?

My daughter Laura does practically everything. She does the foals and yearlings, the paperwork, the sales, whatever needs doing! Claire Watt does all the sales with us – she comes over from England. Emma, my other daughter, will help out at the sale this week.

What was the best result you have had from this sale in the past?

Last year at this sale we had the top price, a Walk In The Park sold to Dick Frisby for €49,000. He was a late foal and the sale suited him. We target the later foals for this sale, and they normally do very well.

Lot 33: Affinisea yearling colt out of Brook Style

He is a very nice, smart-looking yearling. He was born on May 25th and is big for his age. He is a half-brother to three winners – all the dam’s stock are very good-looking horses. He came to the February NH Sale because I thought it would do him an injustice going to an earlier sale.

Lot 58: Blue Bresil yearling colt out of Emma Tanner

An extremely nice yearling, he’s a big, scopey individual with a very good temperament. Just a real quality yearling. He has a great walk to him. He is by the red-hot sire of the moment and out of a Malinas mare who is a half-sister to County Hurdle winner Ted Veale and closely related to Dark Raven (by Malinas).

Lot 90: Blue Bresil yearling colt out of Katies Corner

He was just a bit immature for the earlier sales and bringing him to February has really stood to him. He has really bulked up to be a strong individual and a very nice yearling. He is also bred on the same line as my other Blue Bresil colt. The pedigree has been with me a while. I bought the grandam Rose Tanner at Tattersalls Ireland in 2003 as a four-year-old. She was a half-sister to Camden Tanner and I started breeding from there.

Who are the other members of the team helping you at this sale?

My wife Teresa and my son William both work with me on the farm. Over the years, Fergal O’Mahoney, who is a neighbour of mine and a great family friend, always came to the sales with me and gave me a hand.

What was the best result you have had from this sale in the past?

I sold both Dark Raven and Ted Veale as foals at Tattersalls Ireland.

They would be the two best on the track for us. Unfortunately, Dark Raven died which was a shame as he was the real deal. We are living in hope for the next one.

I normally sell my foals at the November NH Sale but, the way it worked out this year, the later date of the February NH Sale worked well, this is my first time selling at this sale.
