YOU have to hand it to Goffs - they never stop evolving and are never afraid to try something new.

Last year the Orby Sale was very successful, by any measure. The clearance rate was 89%, the average price was up 10% and the median rose by 14%. Turnover topped €50 million.

Yet Henry Beeby and his team refuse to stand still and we have a slightly new format for next week’s edition. The first two days of the sale will be known as Orby Book 1 and this will be followed by the two-day Book 2 sale, formerly the Sportsman’s.

All yearlings offered over the four days will be eligible for the new Goffs Two Million Series, another innovation.

The Two Million Series consists of Europe’s richest two-year-old race, the Goffs Million, on the eve of the 2024 sale, over seven furlongs at the Curragh with a prize fund of €1 million. The same card will feature the Goffs 500 over six furlongs with a value of €500,000. Both races will pay prize money to 10th place.

In addition, the Goffs €50,000 Bonus Series will see €50,000 bonuses paid to the winners of a diverse range of two-year-old maidens on Irish racecourses throughout 2024.

Orby Book 1 boasts serious sire power, headed by the progeny of Galileo, Frankel, Dubawi, Kingman, Dark Angel, Kodiac, Churchill, Lope De Vega, Sea The Stars, Siyouni and Wootton Bassett.

Classic and Group 1 pedigrees abound and among them is the Kingman half-brother to champion filly Skitter Scatter, who topped last year’s Goffs November Foal Sale. The colt is consigned by Stauffenberg Bloodstock who will sell under their own banner for the first time at Orby and they will also offer a half-sister to this year’s German Derby and Prix Niel winner Fantastic Moon.

Tinnakill House have another world class prospect in their half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winning State Of Rest; she is by Sea The Stars who is also sire of a half-brother to Irish Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain, and a full-sister to Group 1 winner Shraaoh.

Kingman is also the sire of a half-brother to 2000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior and a filly out of the Niarchos family’s Group 2 winner Bocca Baciata.

Continuing the classic theme, the catalogue includes half-brothers to 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare and 1000 Guineas winner Mother Earth. The latter also won the Group 1 Prix Rothschild, a race won by Saffron Beach whose own-sister by New Bay will be offered here too.

The two yearlings catalogued from the final draft of Galileo are a full brother to Group 2 winner Delphi and a colt out of Group 3 winner Wind Chimes.

Other siblings to Group 1 winners include a Night Of Thunder half-sister to Lucky Vega, a Wootton Bassett sister to Technician and a Mehmas colt who is a brother to Saratoga Grade 1 winner Glorious Empire.

One of the undoubted star attractions is the Mehmas half-brother to 2023 Coventry Stakes winner River Tiber.

Goffs’ CEO Henry Beeby said: “A stated ambition of Goffs is to attract more of the top tier Irish yearlings to Orby and we are thrilled to present two larger days of impeccable quality in Orby Book 1, following increased support from leading breeders.

“They have been persuaded by the massive international buying bench that attended last year’s successful sale and the evolution of the Goffs Two Million Series which means that only Orby yearlings will compete for a massive €2 million next year.

“We are eternally grateful to our vendors, for we are nothing without their horses, and are so excited to present this superb selection to global buyers.”
