WHICH European yearling sale last year has provided the most two-year-old winners so far this year?

The answer is the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale and that statistic should ensure the presence of plenty of buyers at the 2023 edition of the sale next week.

Starting on Tuesday at 10am, the three-day sale has over 750 yearlings catalogued. The first two days are dedicated to Part 1 and the final day is classed as Part 2.

There have been some exciting and timely updates since the catalogue was printed that includes a half-sister to Group 1 second Spycatcher (Lot 91), a half-sister to Nellie Leylax, winner of the Sunday Series Nursery (Lot 271), a half-sister to Tiger Belle, winner of the Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg (Lot 99), an own brother to maiden debut winner Supercooled (Lot 264) and a half-sister to unbeaten A Lilac Rolla (Lot 653).

Tiger Belle has been a great advertisement for the sale. Bought by Con Marnane for €18,000 at Fairyhouse last year from breeder Paul Giles of Moyfinn Stud, Tiger Belle made £70,000 at the breeze-ups this year when sold to Shamrock Thoroughbreds.

The Cotai Glory filly has raced five times to-date for trainer Ado McGuinness, winning her maiden at Cork, a listed race at Naas and – three weeks ago – bagging a Group 3 at ParisLongchamp.

Incredibly, the first three in that Group 3 Prix d’Arenberg were September Sale graduates. Karl Burke’s runner-up Dawn Charger was a €40,000 buy from Boherguy Stud and the third-placed Graceful Thunder, trained by George Boughey, was sold by Paddy Turley’s Kingsfield Stud for €68,000.

Further afield, Stefano Botti celebrated Group 3 success with his €10,000 Tattersalls Ireland purchase Folgaria who remains unbeaten after winning the Group 3 Premio Primi Passi and both of her listed starts.

Myconian and Man With The Plan are other winning two-year-olds who have scored at listed level, both purchased for €27,000 or less.

Other notable group and listed winning graduates this year include Rhea Moon, Holguin, Sir Busker, American Sonja and Rajonsky.

Highlights of the 2023 catalogue include a Dandy Man full-brother to Group 2 winner Dandalla, an Inns Of Court half-sister to recent Group 3 winner and Group 1 runner-up Spycatcher, a Churchill half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Danedream and Group 3 winner Venice Beach, a Footstepsinthesand half-brother to Group 3 two-year-old winner Great White Eagle, a Mehmas full-sister to listed winner and Group 3 placed Mehmento, a River Boyne half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner A Case Of You, a Ghaiyyath half-sister to multiple group placed performer Qaader, a Circus Maximus half-brother to listed two-year-old winner and Group 2 placed Myconian, and a Profitable half-brother to Group 2 winner Sir Busker.

Other progeny from high class families catalogued include the Kodiac colt out of dual two-year-old winner Strings Of Life, a Lope De Vega filly out of listed winner and Group 3 placed Drumfad Bay, a Starspangledbanner filly out of listed two-year-old winner Flaming Princess, an Earthlight filly out of Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Gilded, a Churchill filly out of Guineas-placed Lightning Thunder, a Kingman filly out of Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Lucky Kristale, a Wootton Bassett filly out of a half- sister to multiple Grade 1 performer Switch, and a Too Darn Hot filly out of dual Group 3 winner Yellow Rosebud.

The list of sires with yearlings catalogued includes proven Group 1 producers Acclamation, Aclaim, Ardad, Bated Breath, Bungle Inthejungle, Camacho, Churchill, Cotai Glory, Dandy Man, Dark Angel, Fastnet Rock, Galiway, Havana Gold, Iffraaj, Kingman, Kodiac, Make Believe, Mastercraftsman, Mehmas, Nathaniel, New Bay, Oasis Dream, Saxon Warrior, Sea The Stars, Showcasing, Starspangledstar, Territories, Wootton Bassett and Zoustar.

Stallions with some of their first crop of yearlings for sale here include Arizona, Circus Maximus, Earthlight, Far Above, Ghaiyyath, Kameko, King Of Change, Mohaather, River Boyne, Sands Of Mali, Shaman and Without Parole.

Promising young sires Blue Point, Calyx, Sioux Nation, Soldier’s Call and Zarak are also well represented.

Native American scoops Curragh jackpot

NATIVE American provided Richard Fahey with his second victory in the €300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes at the Curragh last Sunday.

The Sioux Nation colt made it two from two with a very impressive performance under Colin Keane and provided Saudi Arabian owners Wathnan Racing with their first win on Irish soil.

At last year’s September Yearling Sale Native American was sold for €75,000 by Edmond Ryan of Weir View Stud to Robin O’Ryan and Richard Fahey.

Last Sunday Edmond and Grainne Ryan were at the Curragh to receive the keys to a brand-new Overlander R240 2-stall horsebox, as vendors of the winner.

All yearlings catalogued for next week’s sale will be candidates for the €250,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes which takes place at the Curragh at the Irish Champions Festival 2024.

Once again there will be an Overlander R240 2-stall horsebox for the winning vendor.

Over 85% of the yearlings catalogued next week are qualified for the IRE Incentive and therefore eligible to win a sales voucher of €10,000 per qualifying race in Ireland and Britain.
